that's a safe assumption although Phoenix doesn't seem to enamoured with smaller players. We were very, very desperate for depth at center last year (after Langkow it was pathetic) and needed more size to better compete. It's easy to understand why the decision was made to acquire Gratton.
It's safe to say that Phoenix really wanted to move Briere to the wing but just didn't have the assets to make it work out. Handzus was traded and Kolanos was out with injury. We had to use Shane Doan at center last year and we kept shuffing everyone around to try to get Amonte productive (which was a disaster as well).
One could also argue that Phoenix was lucky to get anything back considering they he could have been had off of waivers on two seperate occasions. Also, players of small stature like Briere are typically dealt for less than market value while the opposite is usually said of larger type players like Gratton.
