You get home ice advantage through the playoffs and a lot of easy nights by playing in a terrible division though. The Canucks were very good in 2011, but results in other seasons suggest their regular season record overrated them. Their first round record from 2010-2013 is a weak 9-13, despite having home ice advantage in every series. 5-10 when we exclude the 2011 campaign where they were legitimately very strong. 2012 was the poorest showing ever from a President's Trophy winner; they are the only winner ever that failed to win a home game in the playoffs.
Points-wise, they were only 5th in the West last year but got home ice advantage due to the seeding format. In a balanced schedule/non divisional format in 2010 the Canucks probably finish 7th in the West instead of 3rd.
This is the definition of benefiting from a weak division, exactly as Button stated.
