Were not, but the author of the linked article D.A.L. MacDonald is, hence C58's thread title. Late 19th early 20th Century Hyperbole essentially. Colorful. Refers to a court case over issues pertaining to a Championship Game with a team from Philly. Certainly Baltimore was an important center, Maryland in general at that time, Babe Ruths hometown. The entire downtown wiped out by a massive fire in 1904, and a city lagging behind Chicago, New York & elsewhere in basic infrastructure, be it water & sewage, transportation.... Hardscrabble.
