The Montreal Winter Carnival was cancelled in 1886 due to a smallpox epidemic, so two Montreal teams travelled to Burlington VT to play a tournament with a team called Van Ness House, named after a local hotel.

In the first game Montreal AAA won 1-0 in overtime over the Crystals, with Richard Smith scoring the goal. AAA then defeated Van Ness 3-0 in half an hour, to become champions. The Crysals defeated Van Ness 1-0 in twenty minutes for the silver medals. The weather was merciless for this final match apparently.

This is from the writeup in Total Hockey (1998).
