Because when you can likely lose Peter Forsberg, Paul Kariya, Teemu Selanne and Steve Konowalchuk after this season, you do what's necessary to win a Stanley Cup.

Winning is the most important thing in hockey, and I'm glad that some people realize this. The fascination with undeveloped prospects versus adding and filling a bonafide need is ridiculous.

You obviously know nothing about the Avalanche's defensive depth in terms of prospects.

Keith Ballard, Tomas Slovak, John-Michael Liles, Johnny Boychuk, Mikko Vittanen and David Liffiton are all promising young defensemen and the Avalanche already have Derek Morris and Martin Skoula in their D corps along with a promoted Liles.

The depth up front is what is weak, not the defense, nor the goaltending.
