This. I also suspect you're shooting differently when on the ice. This is my case too, I find myself shooting more often off the wrong foot when I'm off the ice.

Also, for an offensive defenseman, I think the Datsyuk curve is good, because it's gonna keep the puck lower and the passes on target. I can't tell you what kind of stick you need though.
