If Kane were placed on LTIR tomorrow (3/20), the first day he could be activated would be 4/14 (24 days later), which would mean he would miss the last 12 games of the regular season. If the doctors really think he will be ready to go in 3 weeks (21 days) he could be back for the last two games of the regular season against Washington and Nashville, both on the road. Those last two games might be pretty important in terms of positioning for 1st/2nd/3rd in the division. Tough call.

On the other hand, if 3 weeks is an optimistic estimate, then it's a pretty easy decision to LTIR him and have the cap space for TT, Morin and others.
