Or, look at it this way: if we are rebuilding, then we are exempt from needing to win. We need not be measured up against the other teams in the real NHL races or playoff series.

"Of course we didn't make the playoffs! We don't WANT to just squeak in. We have a higher goal right now."

"Yes, we lost in the first round, but we are doing great on our five-year rebuilding plan!"

It's just so much easier not to have to compete the regular, old-fashioned way, which is on the ice.

Unfortunately, our real GM plays for a real owner who has to put out a real team on the real ice for the real fans.
Your post makes the most sense I've heard in a long time. Very well said, my friend. Fans want it both ways and will never be satisfied. "Let's blow up the team and pile up on prospects for the future" which still doesn't solve the problem. There is no guarantee that any prospects will amount to any form of success.

The Habs HAVE been through the rebuilding phase and, only in the last year or so, are beginning to see guys like Komisarek, Plekanec, Perezhogin, Higgins become valuable components. Grabovski, Kostitsyn and the rest are on the way. I assume some fans would sooner blow up the team, however, thinking it guarantees success. It's a viscious cycle. It's like you said. The fans are upset that we're "squeaking" into the playoffs with some pending UFA's and want them all traded for prospects and would rather not make the playoffs for hopes of a better future. So, now we go through the cycle again and we don't make the playoffs again, only this time the fans seem to think that's ok because we're rebuilding. Same result, different scenario (one seems more acceptable than the other). In the real world, if you have a chance to make the playoffs you go for it. As they say, anything can happen once you're there.
