Seems I misjudged what you meant in a couple of places, in general you do get alot of flyers fans saying "He didn't do it then, why should he able to do it now." so you have a good point there and I understand where you're coming from.
His first half numbers last year were great and he only faded once Clarke announced Cechmanek as the playoff starter last year and he stopped getting consistent starts, it could be down to this as to why his numbers slipped, we don't know.
He's definitely improved and you'll find many fans of his in Phoenix happy for him. But like I said.. he didnt hold a candle to Burke. There's no debating it when Burke's stats are so vastly superior on the same team. (winning record versus losing, .921 sv % versus .895ish and a GAA over half a goal better).
I know you know it, and I know it, but I have to say it. Things change, I would wager Esche is a better tender than he was back then and if in the same situation would put up better numbers this time. Whereas I'm not sure if Burke has gotten better, worse or stayed the same over two years. His numbers indicate he's not performing quite as well (2001-2002 - GAA 2.21 and .920 SV%, 2003-2004 - GAA 2.81 and .908 SV%) but then the Phoenix team has changed as well so it's not a fair comparison really.
