I think the rationale in moving Skoula for a defenseman, or two, is that the Avs would acquire a player(s) who would actually play defense well
, rather than potentially play defense well some time down the road, which Skoula is capable of, but not doing. He's an offensive defenseman, the Avs have plenty of those; they need some more dependable types.
What they need is a rental or two, guys whose offense can be negligible, but who can be counted on to be solid come playoff time. Skoula is a high wire act, Liles has been great but is largely unproven and never played this many games in a season, and Skrastins isn't playoff tested. Skrastins I think will be just fine, but when you look at the big picture, it would very good for the Avs to have some better depth, and this is true even when Blake comes back. If the Avs are in the playoffs and lose one of the top 4, they really don't have anyone to step in that you would want stepping in (Brett Clark, DJ Smith, Chris McAllister). They don't need to look much further down the road than this year's playoff run because there is talent in the system that could be ready as early as next season.
