Well I do believe that Latendresse is more skilled than Smyth, but I don't think he will ever be that good. Like someone else already said, he don't have the heart and soul to be a Smyth. On the other hand, he could be a force offensively and he could park himself on the PP and get a lot of goals.
But I agree, the media are overhyping him quite a bit.
But R they really..? If you look at Lats progression with stats only it compares with guys like Smith, Doan, Bertuzzi. His physical attributes and hits also compares in his favor. I we look in the rookies this year he is in 10th spot but asside from Staal and Kopitar all the other guys are at least two years older then him. Forgetting the fact that he is a local boy, when is the last time we could mention something similar with a 19year old on the team..?
Can he become a player like one of the guys mentionned above: "I would very much like that", can he be better: yes, can he fail to reach is potential: yes. Does it make it wrong to compare him with these guys... no!
Oh and as a last comparaison he is also the same age as Eric Staal when he reached the NHL....
Eric Staal : 2003-2004 Hurricanes 81 11 20 31 -6 40 2 1 3 164 6.7
Latendresse: 2006-2007 Montreal 69 15 13 28 -14 36 5 0 2 109 13.8
