The main problem is that they aren't close to contending for atleast two more seasons. A top-tier free agent like Stastny won't sign with a team like Nashville due to lack of contention. A trade for Spezza in the same breath only guarantees him to play in Nashville for a year.

Nashville needs to start going after players already signed to extended contracts, and at a prime NHL age (Eberle etc.) This needs to be relatively quickly or they need a home-run in the draft. It's harder for the later when you're a middle of the pack team every year.
