This come back all the time, and I feel most people are missing the point.

We all understand, including the habs management, that requiring a coach to speak french cut good candidates from being considered. WE GET IT. It doesn't mean it's going to change any time soon.

The habs, as a franchise, have been very tight to Quebec and quebecers national history. This isn't something that we "want". This isn't something that is debatable. This is a fact. If you don't understand this fact, or don't care about it, then you don't understand the deep historic importance of the franchise you root for. It's as simple as that.

Coming back again and again and again with the french-speaking-coach rant won't change anything. The habs won't suddenly be less closely associated with Quebec and its francophones just because someone feels it's detrimental for the on-ice product.

Every owner, every GM, since god knows when, has understand that and has selected french-speaking coaches. The last time it didn't happened, we all saw the public and media reaction. And management understand - more than absolutely everyone here - the importance of selecting a talented coach too.

Does it mean the situation is eternal? Who knows. Maybe one day there will not have any french speaking coach available, and the habs will have to make a thought decision. Maybe an incredible candidate with local ties (Babcock) will become available at the right time and change everything. Until then, whining about this is as productive as whining about the weather or the taxes.
