Beg to differ. Not every team expects players to step in as 19-20 year olds. Some, especially a team like the Devils, pride themselves on a developmental system where players pay their dues in the minors for a season or two before going on to the NHL.
2000 draftees played in juniors until 2002 or NCAA until 2003. This is the 1st or 2nd year pro for most of them.
