Now they just need a 2nd line center...whether via free agency, trade, or having someone like Dubinsky step up.

IF the Rangers got some quality rookie years out of guys like Dubinsky and Staal, they could possibly be a cup contender by the end of next year (as in, heading into the 2007-08 playoffs).

I say that just based on having a 1st line with Jagr on it (and assuming they keep Nylander) and a 2nd line with Shanahan and guys like Straka, or Prucha, and hopefully a 2nd line center who gets the job done.

A solid 3rd line with guys like Avery and Cullen and Callahan or whatever.

and a physical 4th line.

If after a season, Staal was settled in and guys like Tyutin made strides forward, the defense might not be too shabby and would have Lundqvist backing them up.

It'd all require some coming together and all that, but doesn't look that bad. Obviously I'm projecting way out there and it probably won't go the way I mention with guys like Dubinsky and Staal, but it's just an idea
