I believe JD, when he says they got immediate offers for Metro. He COULD have traded him off for someone or future assets that might have helped The Blues in the long term. But The Blues needed 2 NHL-level forwards on the roster, to replace Guerin and Tkachuk. Metro could fill in enough to not have a TOTAL collapse of the offence, and make the team end up being unable to win another game. Such a collapse would have hurt team moral, and embittered the fans.

There's a threshhold of experience needed to run an offence, and man 4 forward lines. In The NHL, once you get below that minimum
level, it becomes very difficult to score.

Basically, The Blues needed a couple of NHL-level warm bodies at forward, and Metro and (to a lesser extent), Niemenen, filled that bill.

I don't think that bringing up Whitfield (and trading Metro) would have
been as good.
