All the things above aren't the same and aren't all related to speed.

Bure was as fastest as anyone ever in a straight line from goal lien to blue line, but Fedorov was a better all-around skater. Not quite the accceleration or top end speed, but Fedorov was shiftier, more solid on his skates, could skate backwards like a defenseman etc. etc.

Gretzky wasn't fast, but he was one of the best skaters in the world during the 80's. Nobody could stop, cut, turn like Gretzky could.
