Flames' Turek placed on waivers

Roman Turek's days in Calgary appears to be coming to an end.

TSN has learned that the Flames have placed Turek on waivers. Sources say the Flames are hoping that a team in need of a goaltender might take a chance on the underachieving veteran who has lost his number one status to Miikka Kiprusoff.

However, Turek's guaranteed $5-million contract next season with an option for $5.75-million may prove to be a stumbling block.

Turek is scheduled to clear waivers at noon on Saturday. If he's not picked up, the Flames could try to deal him to another team but would likely have to pick up part of his contract in any deal.

Turek was acquired by the Flames in June 2001 in a trade with the St. Louis Blues. After posting a record of 30-28-11 in his first season in Calgary, Turek slipped to 27-29-9 last season. This year, he has just four wins in 15 appearances. Over the course of the last three seasons, his goals against average has climbed from 2.52 to 2.67 this year.

Turek's lossWednesday night in Detroit was only his second appearance in the last 10 games. He missed 39 games earlier this year with a sprained right knee.
