Canes Roster Set

According to JR the roster is set. Might try and trade Letowski for a depth defenseman, but as of now, he's happy.
Quote:
Canes Happy as they Are

RALEIGH - The trade that brought Matt Cullen back to the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday also may have wrapped up the team's offseason business with less than two months left before training camp.

Cullen's arrival completed Carolina's lineup at forward, with 13 players under contract, and Andrew Hutchinson's departure leaves the Hurricanes with seven defensemen under contract, a number Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford considers acceptable.

That rules out, for now, any return of David Tanabe, who was one of Carolina's best defensemen in the second half of the season. As things stand, the Hurricanes will go into camp -- physicals are Sept. 13 with the first practice on Sept. 14 -- with Bret Hedican, Frantisek Kaberle, Niclas Wallin, Glen Wesley, Mike Commodore, Tim Gleason and Dennis Seidenberg on the blue line.

"I don't believe we'll do anything," Rutherford said. "We have seven defensemen, and we have some depth now in our system with the guys we picked up last year. I believe we'll go with it the way it is now.

"If we get into a real jam with a rash of injuries, we'll have to deal with it at the time."

The Canes signed 29-year-old Wade Brookbank, a veteran of 68 NHL games, this summer to play in Albany (AHL) and provide additional depth. None of Albany's other defensemen -- Tim Conboy, J.D. Forrest, Noah Babin, Casey Borer, Brett Carson, Mark Flood and Joey Mormina -- has played in an NHL game.

Anton Babchuk, who at age 23 has played in 96 NHL games, is on the trading block and probably will play in Russia this season.

Given their financial situation, the Canes would consider trading a forward for a defenseman -- most likely Trevor Letowski, who has slid down the depth chart with the reacquisition of Cullen and signing of free-agent center Jeff Hamilton.

"We would consider moving a forward, if necessary," Rutherford said.

I really wish we could find some takers for Letowski and Babchuk for some picks or Albany depth.

I am also disappointed we don't have a spot for Tanabe. I may be in the minority (at least on these boards) but I really like what he brought to the table for us. Hopefully he remains an option if Hedican decides to retire...

That sort of statement in the past by JR has sometimes been followed by a move.

Cue more whining about not getting a defenseman.

Agreed. I believe our roster was set last week, all we've done since then is re-acquire Matt Cullen.

When John Forslund says there is still a 50/50 shot Bret Hedican will even play next season, you can understand that some would want a little insurance. I'd hate to see Brent Sopel signed at a reasonable price one day and Bret Hedican decide to retire the next day.

JR is the master of saying one thing in the press and then doing something else completely different. I'd say this is JR code for "trade imminent", but that's just me.

I am in disbelief that we went another offseason without improving our defense.

ok.

our d kinda sucks.

lets get an upgrade.

its hard to argue the logic. we didnt make the playoffs. our d was ineffective. our offense wasnt as explosive and it couldnt cover it up anymore. i like the lets outscore em philosophy, but it wouldnt hurt to add at least a b+ defensman to the core of c+/B- weve got presently.
we've got a few guys who could be B's, but they havent been consistently.

In addition playing on the third line, Cullen, along with that of fellow off-season acquisition Jeff Hamilton, will also see significant time playing the point on the power play. Rutherford said that takes some of the pressure off of the team to acquire a defenseman who could do the same.

“It certainly doesn’t give us any urgency to add a defenseman, but if we could add a puck-moving defenseman, it would help our team not only on the power play but five-on-five as well,” he said. “If someone comes along, that’s something that we’ll look at, but we don’t have the same urgency now.”

The silence is deafening. JR must be getting ready to make a big trade.

Ottawa looks like they're going to have to move Gerber now, or pay $8 million a year to goalers. Someone must have a big contract to swap (not us of course, but someone else).

I think we can expect big things from Jeff Hamilton, because I plugged him in on my NHL 07 game and he has been on a roll, 2G and 4A in 3 games. And we know that is the best predictor of true on-ice ability.

If that were true, Alex Tanguay would be the highest paid player in the NHL. In every NHL 07 franchise I play, he puts up points at a pace that Gretzky couldn't even keep up with.

Funny you say that, I have simulated a few seasons, and the man pots a good 60 goals each year, wins the rocket richard trophy with ease and leads the league in points.

Exactly the same in my franchise, I believe he recently had a 72-goal season. He is always at the top of the points list. Because of that, the Calgary Flames are ALWAYS the best team in the Western Conference and in the Stanley Cup Finals.

The only problem with the D is that Hedican and Wesley are ancient.

With Cullen and Stillman back at the start of the season will help the offense. Maybe that'll ease the pressure on the D. Esp. helping out Gleason and Seidenberg.

At least there's no Tanabe this season. It helps a ton that Kaberle is back at the start too.

Wesley is old but he's not a problem. He's still as steady as they come.

... why does he still have us in the running for Markkanen and the Eagle? Grahame has one more year left, that is unless we have an upcoming deal with Phoenix I don't know about yet.

While this isn't what I want to see happen, this is what I think could happen IF all of Eklund's recent rumors about the Hurricanes are true.

Sign Michael Peca.
Move Matt Cullen to winger.
Trade Erik Cole.

As for the goaltenders. I don't think a trade will happen with Phoenix, David Aebischer kind of fills their need for a goaltender. Can't see Ed Belfour as a Hurricane, ever. Jussi Markkanen is a possibility, as we had a first-hand look at what he can do when needed in a pressure situation. As for John Grahame, not exactly sure what could happen with him. Could he possibly be considering retirement?

Unless he was simply completely dissatisfied and wants out of hockey... I can't see that one happening. IIRC he was prety well liked in the dressing room and liked the environment here with a coach that won't throw him under the bus in the press after a bad performance.
