Asign Kaspar to minors.
Sign Avery at 2.500.000
Sign Hossa at 1.000.000
UseStaal on the NYR roster (meaning Strudwick or Pock will not count against cap) adding around 300.000
Leaves approximately - 963.000 as a tight wiggle room.
You could then
Asign Montoya to New York halfway through the season using 500.000 USD in space + ev bonusmoney.
Trade prospect/pick/ev underachiever at the trade deadline for one final piece to bring The Cup to Broadway
Possible? maybe
Probable - NO. Or is it?
Comments???
No. The $3.263mil already accounts for a $3mil overage due to the bonuses, so you cannot add them in again.

Wow. I finally understand the ramifications of most of my "what if"'s concerning the cap.

Thank you to the Rangers for pushing the limits and thank you Kodiak and Irish Blues for explaining it so succinctly.

So now - after trading Cullen - this is possible ?

Sign Avery at 2,5 M
Sign Peca at 2,1 M
Sign Hossa at 0,9 M
Costs 5,5 M

Leaves 0,6 M

Using Staal on the NYR roster (meaning Strudwick or Pock will not count against cap) would be adding around 300.000

You could then:
Asign Montoya to New York halfway through the season using 300.000 USD in space + ev bonusmoney.

Very tight fit
Maybe someone comes up from Hartford and someone gets sent down/traded?

"A team can exceed the salary cap by $3.77 mil (7.5% of the cap) to pay these performance bonuses, but any excess will be dead cap space for the 08-09 season"

Does this mean any more than the $3.77mm is dead cap space next season or anything over the cap is dead cap space and the most you can exceed without being penalized is $3.77mm (7.5%)?

I'm pretty sure it means anything over the cap is dead space next year. And the max you can go over is 7.5% So there is no such thing as cap free bonuses.

Per hockeybuzz.. http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=8767

The Rangers are so tight against their Cap that they are sqeeking right now. They have $49.3 million already commited, however, Avery and Marcel Hossa are RFAs.

You always make an appearance when there is a salary cap issue in the news regarding the Rangers

You did it with Shanahan, then Lundqvist and now Avery. You don't want to have an intelligent discussion.

Permutations

So where do we sit not that all of our FAs are signed? I'll try to break it down.

I'm assuming the following are definitely on the roster:
Forwards: Jagr, Drury, Gomez, Shanahan, Straka, Avery, Prucha, Hossa, Betts, Callahan, Hollweg, and Orr
D-men: Malik, Rozsival, Mara, Tyutin, and Girardi
Goalies: Lundqvist and Valiquette

I'm assuming the following are possibilities for the roster (assuming no new players are brought in):
Forwards: Dubinsky, Dawes, Bourret, Korpikoski, Byers, and Moore
D-men: Staal, Pock, Strudwick, and Hutchinson

I expect the team to carry 7 d-men and 13 or 14 forwards, which leaves 2 d-men and 1 or 2 forwards from the possibilities list.

So based on the 12 definite forwards above...
Player(s)Total Forwards Cap Hit
Dubinsky35.100967
Dawes34.963967
Bourret35.317634
Korpikoski35.485167
Byers35.075967
Moore35.192634
Dubinsky & Dawes35.5973
Dubinsky & Bourret35.950967
Dubinsky & Korpikoski36.1185
Dubinsky & Byers35.7093
Dubinsky & Moore35.825967
Dawes & Bourret35.813967
Dawes & Korpikoski35.9815
Dawes & Byers35.5723
Dawes & Moore35.688967
Bourret & Korpikoski36.335167
Bourret & Byers35.925967
Bourret & Moore36.042634
Korpikoski & Byers36.0935
Korpikoski & Moore36.210167
Byers & Moore35.800967

And based on the 5 definite d-men above...
PlayersTotal D-men Cap Hit
Staal & Pock10.831667
Staal & Hutchinson10.639167
Staal & Strudwick10.664167
Pock & Hutchinson10.48
Pock & Strudwick10.505
Hutchinson & Strudwick10.3125

Together, Lundqvist and Valiquette have a cap hit of 4.8675.

I am not going to give you the total cap hit for every possible combination. Pick your ideal roster, then add up the total hits for forwards, d-men, and goalies, and then you'll see where we are. However, I will do the following.

22-Man Roster
Minimum Hit50.143967
OverageNone
Maximum Hit51.184334
Overage0.884334
23-Man Roster
Minimum Hit50.7523
Overage0.4523
Maximum Hit52.034334
Overage1.734334
The minimum hits include Strudwick, Hutchinson, and Dawes (and Byers for the 23-man roster). The maximum hits include Staal, Pock, and Korpikoski (and Bourret for the 23-man roster).

Of course, this is only where we sit at the beginning of the season. Injuries will invariably happen, and any injury call-up will count against the cap for the number of days he is on the roster. For that reason, we need to maintain some amount of wiggle room beneath the cap.

So Kodiak, does this mean that we're only going to be able to carry a 22-man roster if we want to stay under the cap? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I get a bit fuzzy when it comes to this salary cap stuff.

A simple question with a complicated answer. The Rangers can afford to have a 23 man roster, but you want to leave yourself room to make some changes at the trade deadline if necessary...and if a guy is just sitting on your roster taking space and not playing, then there's less value there.

The challenge is that there are few players who can be sent to Hartford without clearing waivers, so I suspect we'll see 8 defensemen kept, with Strudwick having the added bonus of being able to play 4th line forward if necessary.

I think for Staal to make the line-up, he'll have to have a very strong camp and force the Rangers to move one of their veteran d-men...either down to Hartford or via trade. There's one spot open at the moment at forward, though it could be a wing or center at this point.

If we fill from within, we're fine even though we're over the cap on 3 of the above scenarios. We can go 3 mil over the cap due to the performance bonuses in Shanny and Girardi's contracts. It's just a matter of how much of next year's cap do you want to eat up this year. So we could carry our most expensive AHLers and still be okay and have room for injury call-ups.

But given Renney's coaching style, I doubt we're going to see a 23-man roster. Renney has shown that he's not one to constantly shuffle players in and out of the lineup. He has his top 18 skaters, and the rest are going to sit 9 times out of 10. It doesn't make much sense to carry more than one spare forward and one spare d-man when we're so close to the cap and the spares won't play anyway.
