as an oiler fan

I can see this blowing up in Lowe's face

Penner's best numbers came playing with guys I call blue bloods----I think Penner is a carpet bagger and the pick that oilers gave up could be a top ten pick

Penner was a RFA this summer.

What's crazy is if this goes through, look at what has happened in the last few months:

Shane O'Brien (8th Round) + Dustin Penner (undrafted) = combined 163 games NHL experience

for

1st Round Pick + 1st Round Pick + 2nd Round Pick + 3rd Round Pick

Yeah, they gave up some talent, but when you look at what it cost them to acquire that talent and how little experience the talent had, this is crazy.

It sucks if we ended up losing Penner but that 1st round pick will most likely be in the top 10 if not top 5 in a deep deep draft.

Kevin Lowe seems to be trying really hard to build one franchise into a dynasty, luckily enough for us it isn't his own.

What did we get for trading down from 16th to 19th last year?

looks like in the new nhl

draft picks are worth less then they were before

O'B for a first still has me scratching my head

however

with the acception of the twins--Burke's drafting record is not that good--hopefully he has better scouts around then he had in Vancouver

I cant believe Burke let a 6'5" 245lb rookie 30 goal scorer go. They guy has shown massive improvement every year.
I bet Burke regrets that Bert signing now.

Oh yeah, it was a 2nd or a 3rd, wasn't it? Basically 1 8th round pick has been turned into a boatload of picks in just a few years.

LOL @ 4.3M...that's still hilarious to me.

Parise 3.125 M...31 goals and 62 points and never stops playing

Penner 4.3M...29 goals and 45 points and has been demoted from lines for not playing

Ship the picks baby

Another way to look at this is:

If a 5'10", 183lbs, 30 goal scorer is worth 3.125Million then a 30 goal scorer who is 6'5" and 245lbs is worth at least a million more.

Bigger men are better playoff performers than small guys, who cant take the physical game over a period of time.

As ANA fans you know that better than anyone where size combined with talent can take you. Look at what Buffalo did in the playoffs with all those small forwards. After a few rounds they just wore down.
If Parise is worth 3.125 then Penner is easily worth 4.25 mill

Stats dont tell the whole story. Penner created a lot of room for his linemates and that doesn't always show up on he scoresheet.

Believe me Burke would have never let Penner go pre-Bertuzzi signing.
He couldn't get Marchant traded (Bob Mckenzie rumour)so he had no choice.

Every year? He played less than 20 games the previous season. How is it possible NOT to improve on that when you play 4x more games the following eyar?

Burkey made the right decision, but this was a lose-lose situation. The picks are obviously nice, but it seems a little hallow to me at the moment.

The thing is, if we can somehow get Selanne and Niedermayer back, I think the Ducks are just as good, if not better, than last year. Yes, Penner was our #2 goalscorer, but Schnieder+Bertuzzi+more experience for our other players should mean it's not as big a blow as it would on most teams.

look at what happened this past season with first round draft picks

maybe it was because it was a bad draft year

but next year if we see 35% of the first round picks traded again--what does that say?

I think in the new NHL--draft picks are not worth as much as they one were when a player got drafted by a team--he was their's till 31 years of age--not it is 26/25 depending on when they come into the nhl...

26/25 is when the guys start kicking out the jam in the nhl--Things have changed with this new cba

Good deal for Anaheim. I wish that Lowe had done this to one of the Wild RFAs.

Bertuzzi was $300k less and is a lot more proven... I think we have size still.
