I don't believe radio stations rumors... they've been wrong way too many times.

I wouldn't either after listening to some of those OC and LA reporters. Talk about a clueless group.

I think the best part of the conference call was Dan Russell asking Burke how a salary can be inflationary in a revenue linked cap. Burke really tried his best to dodge that one.

Good stuff... Burke mocking Lowe whether it be classless or not is definitely good comedy.

Classic Burke.
Missing the playoffs with over 1/2 of the roster injured and making game 7 of the SCF is Lowe's "recent" history.

Burke is a huge whiner.

He didn't dodge it at all. He all but said "duh".

The reporter was an idiot.

The reporter was making a point that even if RFA prices rise, it just means UFA prices will have to fall because there is a cap.

Burke didn't seem to understand and sounded lost. He completely missed the point.

No, he facetiously said that the salary was NOT inflationary. When pressed that a salary cannot be inflationary in a cap system, he responded with a quick "yes." Total contradiction in two sentences, with no clarification. He wanted to move on from an uncomfortable question, IMO.

That reporter kinda lost me as well. Didn't quite understand what his point was until you summed it right there.

He did mention that Penner can now be used as a comparable in arbitration, which was why the contract was inflationary.

Edmonton's recent finishes:

06-07: 25th
05-06: 14th
03-04: 17th
02-03: 14th
01-02: 15th

So in the lottery or pretty damn close.

So as millax posted, RFA salaries go up and, therefore, UFA salaries go down. Inflationary for RFAs, yes - for the league, no.

Burke understands, and you apparently do not, that it is not inflationary to the overall salary structure, just to players in that age range. That's why he said that the contract was inflationary to players in that age range. Burke is understandably upset about this because it happens to be detrimental to his team. He's trying to insinuate that it's bad for every team in the league, when clearly that's not possible in a revenue-linked system. Some teams will be hurt by inflated salaries for RFAs - namely, those teams with attractive RFAs-to-be who happen to be near the cap or budgetary constraints. Other teams will be able to benefit from the change in RFA valuation - those without top-level RFAs to re-sign, and those with cap/budget space to spare. Burke clearly doesn't want to say this, however, because it would destroy his rant.

Classic Burke.
It's not like Burke is gonna do much with those draft picks anyways. His drafting the last few seasons with the Canucks was just horrible. He is good at making trades, and inherited some good prospects when he came to Anaheim..ie. Getzlaf, Perry.

Dan Wood asks really good questions...about Getz and Perry getting signed and about Bobby Ryan's chances now that Penner is gone.

I listened to that too. They made a great argument on why he will retire. What else, short of a Hart Trophy, does Nedermayer play for next season? He's won just about everything including winning a cup with his brother. What else is there for him to play for? He sure doesn't need the money.

Yeah, it sucks that the Ducks lost a decent (not great) scorer, but look on the bright side, at least we're not paying over 45 mil for this roster:

Forwards: Penner, Hemsky, Horcoff, Pisani, Torres, Stoll, Moreau, Sanderson, Reasoner, Pouliot, Thoresen

Defense: Souray, Staios, Pitkanen, Tarnstrom, Green, Grebeshkov, Smid

Goalie: Roloson, Garon

45 mil for a team with no superstars, a lot of 3rd liners, and some of the worst defensive D in the league.

It's not a final roster yet. Also, they have D-Men (along with other assets) that other teams are willing to trade superstars for.

Also, isn't it funny Burke calls Kevin Lowe classless when he signed Todd Burtuzzi? The player with the least class in the league which should be in jail.
