OT: Giants or Jets?

Being from Canada I don't know much about the New York sport scene except they have alot of teams and most of them are supported well, I know the Yankees are a bit more popular then the Mets, and the Rangers are a bit more popular then the Isles, but I've really wondered for the longest time who has more fan fare between the Giants and Jets, could someone give me a good unbiased assumption.

It depends what area of the New York/New Jersey area. In Long Island it is the Jets. The rest I don't really know, but i think most of jersey is Giants territory.

jets...but honestly, i don't care about football anymore....even if i am in a huge football town.

honestly, when going out in denver on a sunday, expect to see 80% of people wearing broncos gear....

Definitely more Giants fans..but one thing I have noticed is that the Giants fans seem to be (in general) more of an older fan base..perhaps it goes back to people passing down season tickets from when they played at Yankee Stadium.

Jets fans alot of the time are alot younger I've noticed. That's not to say there aren't young Giants fans and old Jets fans, there are plenty of them, but that's the experience I've noticed.

And as for the tri-state area...it usually seems to be like this:

Upstate NY: Giants (although western NY and some parts are Bills dominated, obviously)

Connecticut: Giants (although some parts are Patriots fans)

Westchester: Giants

Bronx: Giants

Queens: Jets

Brooklyn: Jets

Long Island: Jets

Manhattan: Both

Staten Island: Giants

Northern Jersey: Giants

Obviously there are exceptions - I'm in Brooklyn and I'm a huge Giants fan - but this seems to be the majority. In alot of cases it is like this with the Yankees and Mets too as alot of Yankees fans seem to be Giants fans and Mets fans seem to be Jets fans.

More Giants fans, by a good bit I'd say.
More Rangers fans, by a good bit I'd say.
More Yankees fans, though the gap is closing a bit.

I'm a Jets, Mets and Rangers fan. Odd that I'm a Rags fan, I know.

I am part of a small demographic that can root for both teams. Became a Giants fan in the late 50s and early 60s (about the same time I became a Ranger fan) when they were the only football team in town. Becoming a Giants fan in those days (YA Tittle, Sam Huff, Charley Conerly, Del Shofner, etc.) meant becoming a Giants fan for life.
When the AFL came into existence in the early 60s, the Jets were called the Titans and they played at the Polo Grounds. They were not in competition with the NFL at that point, so for a football starved teenager, they became another team to root for. As a teenager, having an upstart league that was bucking an established league was enticing. It was also fun, after watching the traditional NFL games on Sunday at 1 PM to later, at 4 PM turn on the more wide open AFL teams.
Even when the leagues merged later in the 60s, I could root for both the Giants and Jets. I am more of a Giants fan however, and when the two teams meet, I root for Big Blue. But I have no problem rooting for the Jets and hoping they go to the Super Bowl.
I know many Jets fans still have sort of an inferiority complex about the Giants (sort of like the Mets, whom I am a fan of with the Yankees, whom I hate), but I see both football teams as equals. I don't think one gets more publicity in the media than the other. Both teams have incredibly passionate fans.

Queens might be debatable, but Brookyln, IMO, is definitely Jets territory.

I am competely just predicting these percentages but this is what i think:

Yankees>Mets 55-45%
Rangers>Islanders 80-20%
Jets>Giants 60-40%
Knicks>Nets 70-30%

I dont know how many of you have been to the nfl draft but there is so many more jets than giants fan there as one example.

Queens might be about 50/50 but Brooklyn, at least the part I live in, is packed with primarily Jets and Mets fans. Plenty of Giants fans too but the majority is for Gang Green.

Good stuff. That must have been awesome having 2 quality football leagues at the same time like that.

I'm a diehard Giants fan but I have absolutely nothing against the Jets and root for them as long as they aren't playing the exhibition game against the Giants or the game once every 4 years (which is this year...and I hope that the Giants destroy them ). Plus I loathe the Patriots, so I always root for the Jets big time in those games. I think it's a little bit different than the Mets/Yankees situation because now there are 6 games a season and for some people it still goes back to the days of when they were Giants/Dodgers fans and passed that down to their kids since they were in the world series almost every year.

Now if the Giants and Jets met in the Super Bowl...well, things might change.

You're certainly right. My response was speaking specifically to New York and the northeast in general, not the world. In New York, the Mets are gaining popularity, which is indisputable.

I think you've got that one backwards. No way that there are more Jets fans in NY.

I a myself am a Giants fan and living in Southern New York, right next to North Jersey, that makes sense.

However I do not hate the Jets, infact I root for them on most non-Giants related games. I simply care and know more about the Giants.

Giants-Jets rivalry seems to be pretty calm just by reading this thread.

As for other major sports I am a Yankee and Knicks fan.

Agreed. The two teams almost never play each other so it's nigh impossible to develop any bad-blood type stuff. Also, there's no dynasty there, so neither of the teams is seen as an "Evil Empire" by the other contingent's fan base.

Mets, Jets, Rangers.....i also agree with the statement earlier that the jets seem to have a younger fan base while it seems like there are more older giants fans...as of not the giants are more popular...but if this trend it true and jets can be successful i believe this can change

with that said...
