synthetic ice training?

Has anyone ever practiced on synthetic ice? What is it like? There is a synthetic ice training facility near me that has a goalie program, but I'm not sure about it. A brochure mentioned that it offers more resistance than "regular" ice, which makes you stronger. Does it affect your skates?

Thanks...

I know that the Rinx in Hauppauge, NY has a "Treadmill-Like" machine that has artifical ice and a harness that holds you in and you skate on it in place. Kinda cool.

it makes you work much harder, my high school coach runs one so we go on a ton

very good work out, makes you feel like you are flying when you get back on real ice

just make sure you sharpen your skates after for it dulls them quickly

Yeah I've done this on the treadmill machine as a player. As far as skatewise all it did was dull my skates a bit so on big deal there. I'm honestly stumped how it could really benefit a goalie but it helped me alot normal skating. BTW it's scary as hell to start.

This "synthetic ice" will tear your blades up and require more frequent trips to get your skates sharpened.

Other than that it is good for resistance training.

Yeah, just use dull blades. Don't have to worry about sharpening them for synthetic ice.

Thanks for all the answers. I actually switched to ice from roller, so the resistance wouldn't be that big a deal for me, I wouldn't think.

As for how it would benefit goalies, I don't think it's a treadmill, that's not how it was described on the brochure I saw. They definitely have a very goalie-specific specific program, so it must be something slightly different than that.
