two of the best observations posts I have ever read, SL

Watch out P303...there is a new sheriff in town, lol.

See, I think I've done better. The goalie section was good, but I felt that I rambled a little too much in the scrimmage section and actually put more opinion in there than observation. Thanks for the compliments though.

Yeah, personally I think that often throughout the past two seasons that P303's posts and mine have actually complimented each others in many GDT's and observation type of threads. We see a similar game, but usually post a little differently and I think that both of us enjoy reading each other's posts.

Thanks Slake. Those posts were excellent reads, I especially liked the goalie breakdown!

Awesome updates Slake. Really good stuff there. I also find the whole tootoo situation very interesting. With any luck hopefully philstrom takes his roster spot.

I wanted to be the first to provide a synopsis of the scheduled 11:20 scrimmage today.

Here it is: There was none.

I don't know if accolades like those bestowed on Slake recently are likely to follow for my efforts but I can assure you that it is a comprehensive, well-thought out and carefully edited (originally 4 words but reduced by 25% through careful edits) attempt by me.

I couldn't make it to the earlier portion of practice so someone else will have to cover that part of the session.

Actually...

There was a 45-minute running time scrimmage that began at 10:30 AM. They changed the schedule late last night (I know the refs got called at about 9 PM because I was with one of them) and moved up the scrimmage. Unfortunately, it was not updated on the website and that even left the referees confused last night, enticing a call to the coaching staff to verify.

I'll post a recap a little later as I have to attend to a few things, but just wanted to let you all know there was a scrimmage today. It was definitely not pretty...as a matter of fact...it was quite ugly. I'll post later.

Predators Reassign Eight Players

The Predators reassigned eight players to their respective European and Junior teams today:

G - Jeremy Smith - Plymouth (OHL)

D - Jonathan Blum - Vancouver (WHL)
D - Robert Dietrich - Dusseldorf (Germany)
D - Teemu Laakso - HIFK Helsinki (Finland)

C - Nick Spaling - Kitchener (OHL)
W - Mark Santorelli - Chilliwack (WHL)
W - Viktor Sjodin - Portland (WHL)
W - Patrik Hornqvist - Djurgarden (Sweden)

No real surprises. All of the European players reassigned were expected to play overseas this year. Hornqvist needs more time to develop, but it was nice to see him in camp and I'm sure he will be better next season for his time here.

I actually got the list from Felder at Hockeybuzz. He has a recap of today's scrimmage and a pretty good interview with Blum.

I can't wait till tomorrow night to finally see this team!

today's scrimmage... moved up to 10:30, almost missed it myself..

1 40 minute period, clock continuous

best way for me to describe today was either "scrambling" or "chaotic".. not pretty hockey today, lots of crashing and banging and scrums, virtually no real flow to the scrimmage on either side for most of the day..

lines beginning to take shape;

white team forwards today;

erat-legwand-radulov
gelinas-bonk-hornqvist
ellison-smithson-tootoo
setzinger-santorelli-thorenson
guerrero-wilson-sjodin

blue team forwards;

fiddler-arnott-dumont
pihlstrom-nichol-ortmeyer
hordichuk-peverly-langfeld
vigilante-oreilly-maki
santorelli
defense pairing changed a lot, but in general something like;

blue;
devries-zidlicky
hamhuis-franson
mattheson-yonkman
niskala-blum
thurenson

white;
zanon-henry
weber-dietrich
stehlik-koistinen
sulzer-suter

the blue team won 3-2.. but virtually all the goals were ugly goals..

1-0 blue.. santorelli with a shot off the post from in front with the entire line crashing down low.. honestly could have been 3 different people that might have touched this puck
2-0 blue.. ellis goes to clear the puck out under no pressure and flubs it straight onto dumont's stick who taps it in.. an awful goal
2-1 white... bonk crams in a rebound on ellis after a good shift by him, gelinas and hornqvist holding the puck in deep
3-1 blue.. erat trying to handle the puck in the defensive end, shoots the puck in on rinne (his own goalie), rinne surprised (and why wouldn't he have been?) has to dive to make a stop, rebound straight to dumont just standing there as surprised as anyone, who tucks it in.. awful play, leading to an awfully ugly goal
3-2... good shift from toots-ellison-smithson cycling down low, couple of good hits kept the puck in deep and smithson finds hamhuis sneaking in the low slot.. ellis leaves the 5 hole open and hamhuis scores

not exactly an offensive friendly practice.. lots of ugly plays..

1)franson loses the puck in his skates, and turns it over, leading to a 2 on 1 the other way
2)zidlicky loses the puck in his skate, leading to a dumont breakaway
3)the erat fumble/shot on his own net leading to one of the dumont goals
4)the ellis misplayed gift goal to dumont
5)ellis with a couple of other bad puck clears attempting to handle the puck

if dumont plays 20 years in the league, he will never have two bigger gift goals than he had today lol

thought it interesting trotz was trying fiddler with dumont and arnott... and gelinas with bonk and hornqvist.. trotz really might be thinking of trying fiddler right here..

hornqvist with two good shots directly off face off wins from bonk..

ellis obviously with a poor scrimmage

glad i don't have to make cuts based purely on what i saw today.. not much to go on

see where they "officially" credited the first goal today to spaling instead of santorelli as i said.. all three forwards were driving the net and whacking at the puck, knew it could have been anyone of the three

and then on the last goal, they gave it to tootoo instead of hamhuis... tootoo was trying to screen ellis and obviously tipped hamhuis shot.. a good shift that time for tootoo who had started the whole thing laying a hit on the forecheck during a line change.. let smithsoh and ellison get on and join him cycling the puck.. smithson with a good hit himself and then a nice pass from behind the net to hamhuis driving down the slot

Wow, moving it up hurts me worse than having it cancelled. I couldn't have made it then though anyway. Still I've been waiting all week to sneak out to that 11:20 scrimmage. Thanks for the review-- hopefully slake and others can share as well.

That makes me want to puke thinking of fiddler on the top two lines.

Two interesting notes from the preds site:

Trotz sang the praises of goaltender Jeremy Smith as management sent him back to juniors today. “He has taken a very professional approach to this camp,” Trotz said. He added that Smith plays a very mature game, and is the best 18-year-old goalie they have seen in eight-plus seasons.

The coaching staff is sad to see Patric Hornqvist and Teemu Laakso leaving Nashville for their European teams. They think Hornqvist plays a very “pro-style game” and think Laakso is “very close to playing on our team.”

Wow, that's great to hear. More than I expected.

I was just wondering if anyone has any idea why Laakso didn't play in the last scrimmage while the other reassigned players did? Just for rest? Hope his not injured... we need him back.

Real glad to hear that Pihlström is doing so well. Obviously it's still a long way to actually making the team but still... And Koistinen with a good chance to get the 7th d-man spot! I'm a bit surprised of that actually but then again, I haven't really seen him...

Don't know? Maybe his flight left at a time that required him to leave early? We heard about injuries (minor - hopefully) to Alex Henry and Jason Arnott (he returned to the scrimmage), but not to Laakso...so I think it probably had something to do with his travel arrangements most likely.

For those interested...

There was a change to the schedule and today from 12-2 PM the players that are not playing in tonight's game will be on the ice at Centennial Sportsplex and the practice is open to the public.

Unfortunately, I will miss my first session of camp thus far because I'm working on a project at the house that needs to be done by 4 PM. I'm just taking a little mental break right now.

tonight's probable lines and pairings

most likely we'll see;

fiddler-arnott-dumont
gelinas-bonk-tootoo (or ellison)
hordichuk-oreilly-ellison (or toots)
langfeld-santorelli-thuresson

watch to see if devries is paired with zidlicky, they have done this the last couple of days.. so i guess the pairings will be;
devries-zidlicky
hamhuis-suter (franson)
sulzer-franson (suter)

mason (first half of game)
rinne (second)

Just got in from the game,

1. Had a VERY preseason feel to it. My girlfriend was puzzled by the sloppiness.

2. JP Dumont is going to be a very, very important player for us this year, and I think will cement himself as a bonafide star.

3. Mike Santorelli is a very interesting prospect.

4. So is Alex Sulzer

5. Tootoo is...still Tootoo

6. I wouldn't worry too much about Chris Mason. I think he knows how important he is now, and I think he's loving it.

I'll try to post a more in-depth review tomorrow, but it's been a long day and I'm wiped.
