he was always going to be a stay at home defensemen, so no i dont think he's been a bust, he might not have been as thrilling pick first overall, but he's solid and thats what matters...

I'd expect more from a #1 overall pick, but I admit, he's solid

Defensive partner of Chara. Was Ottawa's best D-man during last years playoffs. He ain't no bust.

Considering that was like the weakest draft ever, Phillips looks like the best pick from that draft (or at least close to it.) So I definitely wouldn't say he's a bust, just overshadowed by Chara and Redden.

A 'bust'? To me, a bust is a guy who was drafted with high expectations in the NHL, but never really makes the NHL for either more than a cup of coffee, or becomes a marginal player.

Chris Phillips is a key player on the Sens. He's FAR FAR FAR from a bust.

'Bust-vile' would be more inclusive to guys like Jason Bonsignre, Alexandre Daigle, and Alex Volchkov.

I think in a weak draft year Ottawa went on the safe side and took a solid defender, they got what they expected. He`s not spectacular, but he is no bust.

Any of the 8 people who voted he is a bust care to provide some reasoning?

No.

He's one of the better 3 or 4 players taken high in that pathetic draft.

He's still a solid top 4 guy.

He's shown the ability to be at least a #2 d-man in the playoffs. By no means a bust...I'd like to have a lot of playoff performers on my team. He won't rack up the points of a Redden because he's a defensive defenseman...something you need to be successful.

When every other team in the NHL would take you, your not a bust.

He's turned out to be a #3-4 d-man.

Exactly..everyone would want a guy like him on their team.

He's no Alexander Daigle. :p

I'd glady welcome Phillips in Edmonton over Kelly or Bonsignore. While he certainly isn't a superstar in the NHL, he's a very solid player and is doing a lot better than Zyuzin, Dumont, Volchkov, Jackman (though he's playing well with the Pens), Devereaux and Aitken. In fact, the only players taken in the draft that look better than Phillips are Morris, Sturm (it's close), Chara, Kaberle and Kubina. I'd say Ottawa made out quite well in 1996 compared to most teams that picked in the top 10..

I did. I think this is a flawed poll. Either he's a bust or he isn't. There's nothing in between. Phillips is a very capable top-4 D, however, he hasn't really lived up to his potential yet. He could have been GREAT, now he's just GOOD.

He hasn't maybe lived up to the hype surronding him on draft day, but he definately isn't a bust.

I wouldn't say so. Especially since the '96 draft was so bad, he might be a top 3 player form that draft.
