Just curious, the only thing I know of him really is the hit, would he have made the squad without the suspension?

I don't think he is. I'd rather see them just get the 20 games out of the way.

EDIT: unless they're trying for appeal, but that would be a waste of effort, anyway.

Supposedly, they're going to call him up to the Flyers roster for days that the Flyers have games so that the suspension can be served, but on days that the Flyers do not have games, he will go back down to the AHL so he can play for the Phantoms.

He was doing a very good job of playing himself onto the team, and then when Upshall and Umberger got hurt long-term, he was pretty much assured of a spot to start the year.

Looks like no one knows...

Timmah's blog: http://v4.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=9738

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren told Chuck Gormley tonight it is "not" 100 percent certain that Downie will be allowed to play in the AHL. Apparently, the AHL is going to think about this. FLyers may have to wait until mid-week before they get a ruling as to whether the AHL will honor the suspension.

During the 05-06 season, Dale Purinton (Rangers at the time) received a 10-game suspension for an incident during a pre-season game against the Bruins (eye gouge to Colton Orr). Purinton was allowed to play for Hartford (AHL) during the suspension and was called-up to the Rangers several times to chip away at the 10-games. There is precedent in situations similar to this. Obviously, the precedent set in the Purinton situation doesn't guarantee Downie will be allowed to play in the AHL, but I think it favors his chances of being allowed to play in the AHL and chip away at the 20-games in the NHL somewhat...

I think he needs to physically be with the team for it to count. 2 years ago the Canucks kept calling up and sending down Rob McVicar from Manitoba because of cap issues and he has to physically be on the plane and report to the team for it to count.

I put this is another Downie thread but it seems like there isn't a mandatory procedure in effect.

Here's a more informative article dealing with the status of Downie and his suspension:

http://www.courierpostonline.com/app...94/1002/SPORTS

The Flyers assigned Downie to the AHL Phantoms Saturday, but are awaiting word on whether commissioner Dave Andrews will uphold the NHL's 20-game suspension of Downie.

According to AHL bylaws, if a player is suspended by another organization, he is ineligible to play in the AHL pending an independent review. Ten years ago, Flyers prospect Jesse Boulerice was suspended one year by the OHL for a stick-swinging incident and the suspension was honored by the AHL.

If Downie cannot play in the NHL or the AHL, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren will need to make room for him under the salary cap, possibly by trading a high-priced veteran like Denis Gauthier, to allow the suspension clock to start ticking. Once the suspension is served, look for Downie to start with the Phantoms and avoid the hoopla surrounding a Nov. 23 rematch against the Ottawa Senators.

I thought we had cap room for him regardless? This has turned into a complete circus.

This really is brilliant...I guess it helps when your farm team is across the street...what does being called up even mean?

I hope once the 20 games are done that Downie get's a look with the Flyers...
