Mara a scratch on Thursday?

Straka-Drury-Jagr
Avery-Gomez-Shanahan
Prucha-Dubinsky-Callahan
Hollweg-Betts-Hossa/Orr

Malik-Rozsival
Tyutin-Girardi
Strudwick-Staal
Pock-Mara

Still unclear is which of those defensive pairings won’t play on Thursday, or even if those are the pairings we’ll see. You would think being paired with Jason Strudwick would not be a good sign for Staal, but there’s also a sense that Strudwick might actually play on Thursday, meaning Thomas Pock and Paul Mara could sit. Stay tuned on that one…

I read that as Pock and Mara are the ones to play...

Zero reason to have Staal up here unless he's playing every day. Pock and Mara both were a big part of the third pairing so it would be suprising to see them both benched for opening night.

Interesting. Strudwick to me proved alot in the preseason has he has done the last couple seasons with NYR. Being steady when needed, provides a decent game and sticks up for team mates. Not a great skater and slow, but worth a shot, I have no complaints about it, I like Mara, but was one to always say if he stays then cool if goes then cool, if he is traded cool, if he is a healthy scratch cool. he is nothing specal to me, but if he will be kept I wouldnt and wont complain.

It looks that way. I just don't see Renney not giving Staal, the most anticipated rookie in a very long time (IMO), a chance to start the season at home against a somewhat lesser opponent. Maybe the pairings could bey Mara- Staal?

Just mean that is the way I take that. I'm really hoping for Staal Strudwick, but don't think it will happen.

I love the prospect of a Mara-Staal pairing.

And if Mara or Staal or Pock sits so Jason Strudwick can play, it's nothing short of a travesty. This is the same Strudwick whom no one wanted last season. And the same Strudwick who played poorly and looked tired in a very short stretch last season. He might be a great guy off the ice and in the lockerroom. That doesn't mean he needs to be on the ice.

If Staal is going to be here, he needs to play.

Let's also not jump to any conclussions, since I am sure Renney is still tweaking a bit.

staal will be playing......no way he makes the team and sits....he will given an opportunity and if they think he needs more time he will be sent down but besides that....he will be playing every game as he should be

I agree, except with the on caveat that he might sit on back-to-back nights.

I think the takeaway...

is that it's not known who's playing and who's sitting. The blurb basically plays both sides. It's a wait and see. The question is why would Mara be sitting and Strudwick playing. That's an interesting way to start ths season, if that's the case.

No to Struds.

I see it like this

Malik - Rozy
Tyutin - Girardi
Mara - Staal

Pock and Struds sit.

Pock and Mara wont be paired together, they are both too loose. Struds and Mara is a drastic pair. Pock and Staal? too young. Staal and Strudwick? Unbalanced and Strudwick cant cover up the youth if need be.

What makes most sense is Staal and Mara.

mara is makin 3 million/year......he better be starting or we better get rid of him......staal is thr future...and if he isnt going to play....send him down so he can get better

renney isnt dumb....mara played well here last year and staal is better then pock and strudwick and needs the ice-time....that will be the pairing

I seriously doubt this is going to happen, especially before this team plays a game or they are given a chance to mesh, but for the sake of generating rumors could this indicate a possible trade of Mara to free up some cap space?

Most likely, those lines mean nothing. They still have 2 more days to practice before the opening game. The smart thing to do is keep Staal with a vet, especially a guy that can transition the puck from the defensive zone to the neutral or offensize zone. We may have been spoiled by Girardi who was actually a steadying presence with whichever vet he was paired with, but for the sake of the team and Staal's development it's best to keep Mara around and in the lineup.

Jason Strudwick is the 23rd man on this roster. No way should Staal sit so Strudwick can play. Paul Mara is twice the player and I'm not a big Mara fan--but he can skate and handle the puck and he's got a shot. Just the skating part makes him better defensively than Strudwick who has a real problem keeping up. Strudwick needs to be cautious just leaving his own end of the ice. Might as well be clear Jason made the team on intangible factors alone. Maybe that's a good enough reason. Skill wise--he's not even close to the other 7 d-men on the team and I'd rather be taking my chances with Sauer and/or Baranka if push came to shove.

Strudwick is the perfect 7th defenseman... Don't understand some people confused by his presence. You don't want a young guy in that spot at all. Plus, Struds is great in the lockerroom and fine on the ice despite some people thinking he's awful.

If they sent down Dawes and Montoya down, not because they weren't good enough, but because they wouldn't see enough ice-time, they would have done the same with Staal. He'll be playing.

There is never anything wrong with easing a kid in, I mean nobody have ever lost confident from a coach holding him back, it works the other way around. You get pissed on the coach.

The advantage with holding Staal back and really easing him in would be that if he suddenly isn't ready, getting sent down won't all be because he didn't cut it on the ice, it will be because he wasn't really given a chance ect ect.

On the other hand, why ease him in if he is ready to handle himself? A NHL season is really long, and resting him some on a regular basis, like keeping him to 70 games instead of 82, would only help his development. Would give him time to recover and put in some extra strength sessions.

But there would be no need to do that for game 1.

Strudwick, I didn't think he sucked last season. He was actually the worst D Id ever seen in the NHL, almost atleast. He was rusty and had no timming, on top of his low skill level. So far in preseason I think he have looked OK actually. If this was the first time I saw him I would have thought that he could have held his own..

Does this wild unsubstantiated rumor have a source, or is it wild speculation?

someone claims to have seen it on The Score ticker, but it hasn't been seen anywhere else and there is no link. Most likely BS.
