I grabbed a #18 York jersey after his rookie year and I was actually happy he changed. It's like a badge of honor when you are the only guy at the Garden, in a sea of #16 jerseys, and you have the only #18. Way I see it is if a guy wore it in the game, the jersey is legit.

Dan Girardi gets the torch of the number 5 being passed on from such greats as Dale Purinton. Slight difference between the players though.

Time to try and remember the password for my old screen name from York's rookie year, NY Rangerz 18 lol.

Staal wore 14 in junior, but that's Shanny's number so obviously he can't wear that here. 18 doesn't seem like a defenseman's number but hey, he's a leader and not a follower

Callahan wore 24 in junior so I assumed he'd go back to that this season, although I figured it'd be before camp started and not so late. Girardi wore 5 with Guelph too, so that I could see coming.

looks like he/she's out of date!

Good to see Staal and Dubi with different numbers. Never liked the 40(ish) number on Staal... give him no. 2

When I first became a fan, Normand Rochefort wore 5. I could not pronounce or spell his name at the time.

I'm w/ you. #4 would see to be a nice fit, and it would be a nice lineage to the past (old time hockey)

If you're looking for longevity with a number, don't get a young player who is wearing a fullback's number, unless you want it to be a badge of honor...

Maybe he was worried about people comparing him to Bobby Orr? (though unfair and totally not the case, but people do it)

Kind of like a forward taking #99 or #66, especially when hes a kid from Ontario.

If he has a number hes comfortable with then he should take it. He might wear 14 next season if Shanny retires so 18 could be just a temp for those wanting to go out and get his jersey...

Yeah I remembered after the post that Cullen had 5 last year. I should have remembered since they were still selling his alternate jersey for $50 bucks at the Double Team store two weeks ago.

I always appreciated Samuelsson here despite his reputation around the league and his past history. He obviously had some dirty hits in the past, but he played his ass off here and I will always appreciate that. I wish more players in the years after him could have played as hard as he did every minute on the ice.
