Great game. Wasn't sure what to expect. The Avs are a good team. They were probably tired on back to back games though but still we looked really good last night. Best way to get attendance up is to keep winning, so we're off to a good start. Now hopefully Weber is not too hurt, one things for sure we dont have the depth we did in the past few years....
Id like to issue an open apology to Zanon. I dogged him to no end when he first came up, but man what would we do without him?! He had about as many blocked shots himself as the whole Avs team combined.
Also, when Mason gets out of position or has to readjust his stance, Zanon always sprawls out and covers open areas of the net, or to the side of the net that prevent easy dump in goals.
Bonk was as advertised and showed more speed than I thought he had.
Gelinas. Clearly not as fast but very smart positionally. Passed on some shots that I would guess are related to the stiches
DeVries. Much better last night than I expected. Good physical presence without the penalties.
Ortmeyer. Good hustle, great hits. Still not sure if the 1st line experiment works out but no complaints.
Zanon. I second the apology- great, great game.
Hamhuis. Continues to play a bigger, more confident game. Very solid.
Rads. Good effort on the PP and still clearly has the burning desire to score. He will find his way.
Erat with some hits that made me think the preseason CBJ shot wasn't a fluke. Did he hang out with Nichols over the summer? Still great at keeping the puck; I still would like to think he can see teammates while looking at his feet.
Legwand. Great defensive game.
Fiddler. Can't complain about having him on that line as things stand now.
Overall, I thought they showed great hustle, great puck awareness and played a smart, scrappy game. Much more intelligent game management than we saw at times last year.
I saw Craig Leipold.
I was standing in the stairwell hallway after the 1st period trying to get an update on Weber when Leipold, Jerry Helper and some other guy came in and went downstairs. They all smiled and said hello, I said hi. I was going to say something about they better be getting the deal done but as they were heading down the stairs Leipold started complaining about the price of beer. "$8.00 for a beer!? Who owns this team?" To which the 3 started laughing.
Good game. I'm sorry, but this just can't be the last home opener. It just can't. The crowd was into it, downtown was packed. You just can't replace the atmosphere of a hockey game.
Way to lead the charge, Captain Arnott!! And great job by Mason.
Good job to the whole team for this win. We needed it.
