The best point he makes is that there indeed are sports as physical as hockey where you see very little retaliation and no fighting.

Anyone claiming that physical sports need the threat of violence to be honest haven't watched rugby, australian football or (the european version of) handball. They are every bit as physical as hockey is without the frontier justice system.

Apart from that it was a pretty poor piece.

You wanna talk about hypocrisy... how about a country with a history of violence like no other, which claims its roots on right to bare arms, and not only practices eye for an eye justice (the death penalty), but has more than 11,000 gun deaths a year... producing writers such as this guy who feel the need to write a column about the damaging effects of a sport which no one in his country watches anyway. It's like writing an article about the negative effects of violence in cricket!

It has been stated again and again: Canada is one of, if not the, most peaceful nations on earth, and while many american journalists don't seem to agree with this, Hockey fighting is the extent of our violence.

You wanna get rid of all Canadian hockey players... be my guest pal, if you don't appreciate the game for what it is... that's fine with me. But to accuse all Canadians of being "goons" who taint the game in any way means only one thing... you don't deserve to watch it.

Next time you think about opening your mouth again... stuff it with another doughnut.

I can't believe the overreaction to that article. He's not the first person to mention Canada as the cause for fighting in hockey, Espn.com had a similar piece weeks ago. Racist?

He said he is sick of Canadian-accented people... and called us neanderthals.

The greatest thing about these boards is the feedback on poorly written articles. I read the entire thread and have decided I wouldn't waste another minute reading another piece of trash from another writer who knows nothing about the sport. Thanks everybody for saving me that minute.

I'd bet that reading the entire thread took longer than the saved minute... :p

Hockey is more violent in Canada because it's our national sport and we care more about it than any other country. On the other side, soccer (european football) is not as popular as in Europe and we've never seen any major brawls in the crowds here.

True...but this way I get to read knowledgable fans' opinions rather than getting fed bull.... from hockey hate mongers.

This thread was borderline to start with. I think it has outlived its usefulness. Closed.
