You'll see Teemu [coming back to the team on] left side of the [proffessional ice hockey team, the Anaheim Ducks] often enough too. Like I said in my other post, it's easier to get the quick shot on the off wing and guys like Bert and Teemu like to shoot [while on the team].

from a nucks fan...

Bertuzzi has played RW with the twins before, but with little success. You think those three would be custom made for eachother, tuzzi running the front of the net and waiting for the sedins to cycle out.. but no dice.

His best days are clearly on RW, but I've never been impressed with him whenever he played on the LW. I think you guys are better off keeping him at RW at least for awhile while he gets accommodated to the team.

actually, Kariya is a LW and Selanne is a RW. Neither on their off-wing.

The big problems with playing your off-wing are that your stick is always on the outside (can limit passing options having to pass through extra defenders, puts you at a disadvantage defensively), that you have to switch sides to get on your one-time side (which forces you to think about getting back and crossing over), and it completely changes the footwork, and body positions (which you would have to re-learn).

I think Bertuzzi is effective on LW only when he's the 3rd option on the line. From the blueline to the red line while carrying/receveing the puck he is more effective on the RW. Once its deep, it doesnt matter. that is, if his linemates were McDonald & Selanne, he could play LW. When its McDonald & Ryan, it doesnt work.

You've got this completely backwards. A right handed shooter like Selanne playing on the right wing means that his stick is mainly on the outside since players have their stick in both hands the majority of the time. For faster one-timers, Selanne would have to play LW to get the blade of his stick on the center ice side of his body.

It's really more important for defensemen to be on their natural side because having a stick along the boards helps control the puck and keep it in the offensive zone. Plus it makes for easier D-to-D passes. For forwards, the most important thing is playing them where they are most comfortable, whether that's their natural position or their "off wing".

Bertuzzi is an example of a forward that is most comfortable playing his off wing. He shoots left so you'd think he's a natural LW, but he is more effective playing RW. Brendan Shanahan is another example. Shanny shoots right but his best seasons all came with him playing LW. A footnote on Shanny - he's prone to extended droughts and one of the tricks Scotty Bowman used to break the droughts was to switch him to RW for a few games. More often than not it worked.
