Miikka Kiprusoff to Flyers trade shot down by Clarke

On XM Radio, which is a partner of the NHL, they played an interview with the late John Ferguson Sr. In it, they talked about his days as a player and his time as a mover and a shaker. In one moment, Ferguson (a consultant at the time with the Sharks) talked about when San Jose tried to trade Miikka to the Flyers and that goaltending coach Reggie Lemelin really wanted him but Clarke for some reason didn't want him. So the Sharks traded him to the Flames.

I emailed and received the interview from XM Home Ice in MP3 format. It came in three files. The relavent info starts at the begining of the file that I will attach (which I've never done here before).

I tried to attach but it kept on saying upload fail. The file is 7.5MB so that may be the problem. I can email it to somebody if they can post it.

I ran into our favorite Flyer, Chris Therien, at a restaurant bar (after he was traded to the Stars) a couple years ago and not sure how we got on the topic but he said that Hexy really wanted to get Kipper and said he was the best goalie he'd ever seen.
That doesn't actually confirm your report, but I would assume that meant the Flyers had some interest.

Nobody could have predicted the goalie he'd turn into when he got to Calgary.

I don't think I agree with that. Lemelin did, apparently, as did those with Calgary. Oh well.

well if he was being passed around for just a draft pick i highly doubt Philly was the only team that SJ offered him up to. many other teams are probably kicking themselves as well.

I don't think that's true. Sure, they could have seen potential to be better than in San Jose, but to be as stellar as he became? One of the best in the business? That's a tough thing to predict after his career has already started.

So many "living in the past/what if" threads, it's starting to become painful. Can anyone stop complaining and be happy with having a halfway competent team again?

yep, not only is it something that took place multiple years ago... we don't even have the same GM.

Well, many thought that he was the most talented goaltender in the Sharks organization, which at the time Nabokov was garnering Vezina consideration.

Apparently not that many, or he would have garnered more than just a 2nd round draft pick in a trade.

Actually most thought that Toskala was the most talented.

If he were a Duck, he'd of been waived.

People in the Sharks org thought Kiprusoff would be good, but not necessarily as good as he's been. Toskala was also (at the time) considered to be the superior prospect. The story with the Calgary trade is allegedly that Sutter called the Sharks and asked for a goalie, either Toskala or Kipper, and it was the Sharks that chose to give them Kiprusoff.

Furthering that, I think I remember a deal being worked out with the Canucks at the draft...the Canucks wanted some sort of contingency plan on Kipper, they wanted to give a conditional 2nd, or some business like that...so the Sharks backed out, the Flames were willing and they got Kipper...

The thought of Kipper with that 2003/2004 Canucks team in the playoffs after Cloutier went down is a scary thought.
