Stanley Cup Non-North American Captain Jinx

Except for Dallas Derian Hatcher who is from the US, no other non-canadian captain has ever won the Stanley Cup. Out of the 6 canadian teams, Montréal: Koivu, Ottawa: Alfredsson, Vancouver: Naslund and Toronto: Sundin have european captains.

Coincidence or jinx?

Derian Hatcher, not Mike Modano.

Neither a coincidence or jinx. It's a matter of numbers. For the longest time, Canadians made up a huge majority of the NHL (now it's down to about 70%), so it seems logical that at least 70% of the captains would be Canadian. Thus Europeans, etc. have not really had the chance to captain their teams to victory.

I bet you will find a lot more Euro captains winning cups in the years to come.

It's all in the numbers. For the longest time Americans and Europeans weren't given the captaincy, because they were in the minority in the NHL, and percentage wise, and so we saw less of them as captains. The less non Canadian captains, the smaller the chance they captain a team to the cup.

Yep, and while the Europeans have recently been named captains of several NHL teams, the few teams which dominated the mid to late 90s already had long serving North American captains...

Well, it looks like a same as European goaltender jinx.

Hasek (2002) was first European goaltender to win Stanley Cup as #1 goalie. At those finals Irbe was on the other side so it was sure before finals that European will win.

Aebischer and Turek won Stanley as backup.

My research also shows that no team with an Iranian born player has ever won the Cup. Clearly, this is a curse as well.

Clearly this is only because (non-NA) European players haven't been in the league long enough.

What would be the % of non-canadian captain in the league right now? Some team like MINN name more than one captain it's hard to say. There have been european captains for more than 20 years in the NHL. I might be wrong but I think that Winnipeg Lars-Erik Sjoberg was one of the first.

I'm pretty sure Tampa's captain is Andreychuck not Vinnie, and Atlanta's is Shawn McCeachern or however you spell it...........I'm probably wrong and making an ass of myself though.

A couple of corrections
  • Atlanta - Shawn McEachern - Canada
  • Washington - NONE - Will be Halpern next year (USA)
  • Buffalo - Rotation - includes Briere, Drury, probably more.
  • Chicago - Eric Daze - Canada
  • Columbus - Luke Richardson - Canada
  • Nashville - Greg Johnson - Canada (7)
  • Minny - Rotation
  • Anaheim - Rucchin - Canada (14)
  • Phoenix - Doan - Canada (15)
  • San Jose - Rotation but I think it's been Ricci, Marleau, and Damphousse the most (all Canadian)

By my count, that makes:
Totals:
Canada - 20 (66.67%) - including SJ
Sweden - 4 (13.33%)
USA - 2 (6.67%) - including WAS
Finland - 2 (6.67%)
Rotation - 2 (6.67%)

Interesting that 12 of 16 captains in the playoffs are North American.

The four with european captains are Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver and Montreal. Three of these teams have had notable difficulties winning in the playoffs...

Undoubtably coincedence, but certantly breathes air into the "Euro captains can't win the cup" theory.

there's SOME basis to that theory because many europeans, even today, haven't grown up dreaming of a stanley cup like canadian kids have. So when push comes to shove they may not take a bullet for the team just to get to the end the way a canadian would. U know - like yzerman playing 2 years ago on one knee........inspiring his team that way but probably cutting a few years off the end of his career.

i think it's less important these days with a lot of teams having a leadership-by-commmittee situation. And it'll definetly be not important any more 10 years from now because you see interviews with young kids in sweden, russia, etc, and they all dream of playing in the NHL and winning the stanley cup while before they dreamed about playing for their home town or representing their country at the olympics.

Speaking of Canadian captains, at one point in time last year, the most ironic thing occurred. While Smith was injured, Todd Marchant was captain of the Oilers. Marchant, of course, is American. Amazingly enough, as the time, no other Canadian team had a Canadian captain: Conroy(USA)-Calgary, Sundin(SWE)-Toronto, Koivu(FIN)-Montreal, Naslund(SWE)-Vancouver and Alfredsson(SWE)-Ottawa.

It's also ironic that Edmonton's captain, Jason Smith, is from Calgary, while Calgary's captain, Jerome Iginla, is from Edmonton.
