Josh Thomson Update On Sam's blog (Avery, Dawes, PP, Prucha, Callahan and more)

http://rangers.lohudblogs.com/2007/1...der-the-knife/

Talks about Avery's surgery and how he wanted to play tomorrow but Renney thought it would be better not to. Mara says that he was able to start working out in 2 weeks after the same surgery. Avery should be out for 2-4 weeks.

It doesn't look like Dawes will be coming up.
Quote:
He also said bringing someone up from the farm was a possibility. Someone asked about Nigel Dawes and Renney said something along the lines of…”or someone else.”
Looks like Dawes fell from Renney's good grace fast.

Powerplay unit #1 was Prucha - Drury - Jagr in practice. Josh says they did a lot work on the PP
Quote:
which was heavily devoted to working on the PP and on how to cash in rebounds.
Quote:
And while we’re here, the regular lines were:

Straka-Dubi-Jagr

Hossa/Avery-Gomez-Shanny

Prucha-Drury-Callahan

Hollweg-Betts-Orr
Also looks like Callahan will play tomorrow.

Anyway, read for yourselves . There's an interesting little thing about a little tool the Rangers started using in practice.

IDK, I feel like Renney would have worded it differently if Dawes was a possibility. Something along the lines of, 'well that's a possibility but we have to look at whoever would fit best into our current situation' would have been something I'd expect him to say. To say that Dawes is a possibility but they also want to look at other players is a lot lighter and more promising. To practically come straight out and say "or someone else" is a pretty strong statement.

I agree with Bluenote. I don't see anything in Renney's remarks to imply that he's down on Dawes.

According to what I read on the blog it just says that he said "or someone else" no further elaboration or normal cryptic Renney jargon

EDIT: Mr. Thomson goes and changes the report to
Quote:
“Amongst others, as a matter of fact. I’m thinking about that.”
I stand corrected!

Amongst others to me implies that Dawes is an option.
Yeah, that wasn't there when I posted the original post . He had written

when I had originally posted this thread and never looked to see that he corrected that after I was arguing like a fool.

I just don't understand Renney's lovefest for Marcel Hossa. He had a nice little stretch last year and can win a shootout once in a while....that's about it.

Yeah. I'm really starting to not like him either anymore. It's coming up on 20 pointless games and it's not only that but he doesn't look like he wants it out there at all. He just really doesn't care, I mean the one time where he had a clear chance I can remember which was 99% a goal was when he was to the left of one of the goaltenders in the game all alone and he tapped his stick on the ground to get Tyutin's attention to pass from the point. When he did that, the goalie found out he was there and saved it easily.

Whatever Renney said you can't argue against the fact that the Rangers have already had the chance to look at Dawes in some NHL games. Maybe they will call up another winger for a quick look? Korpikoski? Or why not Parenteau? But probably Moore again...

Renney isn't down on anybody. Only I am. That's why he is an NHL coach, and me just happy being a fan.
I think Renney must use Hossa with Gomez line before calling for Dawes. He can always call Dawes up for the next game or game after. Hossa is more suitable, since he may free Gomez from looking back and get him focus on offense. Hossa with his strength in the corners will serve as a puck retriever for the big guns.

Hossa is a good defensive player with size. But that is it. I'm tired of hearing (not from you, just in general) that he's a shootout specialist. Renney puts him in almost every shootout. Obviously he's going to score sometimes. Malik won a shootout for us too. Is he a shootout specialist? Anyone can win a shootout for you, given the opportunity. You're 1 on 1 with the goalie. Hugh Jessiman could win a shootout given the opportunity. It's hit or miss. Hossa is a bust, because of the expectations from his brother and flashes of scoring touch he showed playing with Jagr last year. He's just not mentally fit to be counted on to score with any kind of consistency, regardless of what line he's on. He slows down when he gets the puck. His head is always down when he has it, and he doesn't shoot quick enough off the pass and usually gets his shot blocked. If he's going to be in the lineup, he belongs on the 4th line. 3rd if there are injuries. He shouldn't ever be on the 1st or 2nd line with the roster we currently have. I'd much rather have Callahan or Prucha get promoted than Hossa. Enough is enough.

Ditto Bretzky...

and to add, I'm not a big fan of having three small guys (Prucha-Drury-Cally) on a line together. Further, Prucha and Drury have shown zero chemistry thus far and if Avery's out, Prucha should play with Shanny and Gomez with Hossa's bigger body being used with Drury-Cally.

but one thing good about Prucha-Drury-Cally is that in Buffalo Drury played with many fast and young players. He put up 30+ goals with them too, so i think they should give it a try for a few games.
