Is Liles a legit calder contender?

Current liles stats with tonights game agains the wild included.

Liles, COL D 77GP 9G 23A 32PTS +6 28PIMS

he's 7th in rookies in pts for this season, first as a rookie defensemen...

Colorado's 2nd best offensive defensemen behind the stellar rob blake

He would be 28th in the NHL as a defensemen in points, ahead of the likes of morris, ohlund, kaberle, zhitnik, niinimaa, andrei markov, and ofcourse pitkanen....

Thats pretty damn good if you ask me, in my mind, he's definitly a nominee or a top 4 rookie this year for sure...

I'd say that he would be a contender if the rookie crop wasn't so strong this year.

Raycroft will win it in a walk, with Ryder a distant second. Liles might make the top 5, but wishing for anything more than that would be futile, I think.

Personally, I think no d-man is in the same league as Raycroft and Ryder.

Raycroft is too good to say no to.

No, but Liles should be on all rookie team along with Ryder, Bergeron, Hunter, Raycroft and Pitkanen

Something I noticed is that Bergeron on Edmonton has a higher PPG. (0.5), and is a +13. He's only played 52 games, but he does lead all rookie D-men in PP ice time/game.

And could I just point out (since nobody realizes), that Dmitri Kalinin is the same age as guys like Liles and Bergeron (born in 1980), has played 281 games already, and is doing a marvelous job right now as a #1 guy with Zhitnik injured. Mark my words when I tell you that Kalinin is FOR REAL. No doubt. He's putting similar numbers as these rookies but his defensive game is FAR superior to his offense. Although this year he's posting career offensive numbers, and his offense has gotten better each season. This guy has the potential to become a special player. Considering his age, the fact that he's played games this year in which he had over 30 mins of ice-time, he is a ways ahead of most 23 year old defensemen. This "veteran" kid might play for Team Russia in the World Cup.

(Sorry I wanted to post this about Kalinin w/o opening a new thread)

I think it's hard to put Lombardi or Staal there and no Hunter.

And let's talk about Malone and Ruutu while we're at it.

Truth is, this year, there's Raycroft and Ryder, and then there's everybody else. It's one strong rookie season indeed.
