I sent a very mature letter to the officials just now. As did 3 of my buddies. Two of which are Islander fans and another a Canadien fan.

According to Zipay's blog, even the Sabres made official complaints about bad calls in yesterday's game.

I don't think we're being conspiracy theorists per se, but we're upset at terrible refereeing. Is that a problem?

For what it's worth, I put in my complaint in the most mature, self-controlled manner I could....but the temptation to add a lot of "sentence enhancers" was definitely there and I had to restrain myself from adding "you myopic mother******s at the end.

What, you didn't tell them if they had one more eye, they'd be a Cyclops?!!!

I think we should write to the advertisers and tell them we won't buy your products because you are advertising for a sport that can't even get basic calls correct. Hopefully, NBC drops the NHL, Bettman gets fired for losing a TV contract and they put Nick Fotiu in as Commissioner! We can dream, can't we?

Wow, so the Sabres felt the officials were being so unfair to the Rangers that they felt embarassed?

We can only hope they requested that the Rangers start game 4 with a 1-0 lead...it's really the honorable thing to do.

Am I the only one that finds the format of the NHL rulebook overly complicated? Its almost as if they don't want you to find the rule you are looking for so you can't prove them wrong. It often takes so much time and effort to find rules that I find myself giving up on what I am trying to do. It makes me angry.

Good this old thread is perfect for this question.

Ok, so Hockey, like any other game, is entertainment. Without fans theres nothing.

So, I wanna be entertained.

In between periods the players and coaches are interviewed about the game, so why not the refs? Im not talking about a hour interview, just some quick sound bite about the previous period. The refs have to explain calls to the captains of the respective teams, so why not explain them to the fans?

We can all speculate on why a call was made or not made, but maybe just getting the refs explanation would clear some things up.

Hell, I dont expect them to be perfect, Id accept we didnt see it as an answer.

I know it will never happen, but it would be nice.

In all of North American sports Refs are never accountable for their calls. Heck, the teams can't even complain in the media or they get fined. In Europe they get roasted but they still aren't really held accountable.

It's just the way it is. Refs are paid to do a job where everyone (players, coaches, fans) hates them and it's a very hard and subjective job. They aren't going to put the ref on the spot like that. Plus with hockey being played at such high speed and infractions that are called now-a-days being so minuscule it's easy to miss calls. A missed call on some bs play isn't what bothers me, it's the obvious calls that occur right in front of the ref that aren't called. That goes from subjective to bias or lazy one of the two.

Understood, but in the cases where you see the ref explaining the call to the captain, assistant captain or coach, why not let the rest of us hear it as well?

Also, don't fill up their email with one call emails. If they make a bad call, let it go. Every ref makes a bad call now and again. If they make a few, and you feel like letting them know in a respectable manner that you don't appreciate the lack of professionalism, go right ahead.

In the past, I very occasionally saw some refs interviewed (Paul Stewart and Bruce Hood come to mind), but I think the league just wants to keep them very quiet about everything. I agree, however, some transparency would be nice, no?

There's some ref content in one of the NHL DVDs, "All Access" maybe...
