A Cup Run Amok

It’s been a long, strange trip for the oldest trophy in U.S. sports. Here’s hoping the next 110 years are just as demented.

1903 Ottawa Silver Seven
In some twisted Canadian ritual, Lord Stanley’s 10-year-old cup is buried in a graveyard after a drunken victory party.

1905 Ottawa Silver Seven
On a bet, drunk defenseman Harry Smith drop-kicks the trophy onto the frozen Rideau Canal. Coach Alf Smith retrieves it the next morning.

1906 Montreal Wanderers
In what remained Stanley’s greatest humiliation until 1940, the Cup is reconstituted as a flower holder at a team photographer’s studio.

1910 Montreal Wanderers
The Cup spends the entire summer sitting in a Montreal bowling alley, filled with chewing gum.

1924 Montreal Canadiens
After fixing a flat tire, the Canadiens leave their trophy on the side of the road—probably to make room for beer—returning to claim it hours later.

1940 New York Rangers
Garden officials burn their mortgage papers in the Cup while players ceremoniously urinate in it, igniting 54 years of futility for the Rangers.

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

1941 Boston Bruins
Entire team sips champagne out of Rangers’ urinal.

1980 New York Islanders
Clark Gillies uses it as a dog bowl. Bryan Trottier takes it to bed. “I’m not one to kiss and tell,” Trottier said. “But it’s a night it’ll never forget.”

1984 Edmonton Oilers
Team owner Peter Pocklington illicitly engraves his father’s name on the chalice. NHL officials hammer a row of x’s (which remain to this day) over the name.

1991 Pittsburgh Penguins
Penguins sink the Cup to the bottom of Mario Lemieux’s pool.

1994 New York Rangers
Ed Olczyk uses it as a feedbag for ’94 Kentucky Derby winner Go for Gin. Mark Messier brings it to a strip joint, where it is part of an onstage show.

1996 Colorado Avalanche
Sylvain Lefebvre has his first daughter baptized in the sacred chalice. Apparently, no one told him about the strippers.

1999 Dallas Stars
Guy Carbonneau reportedly launches the Cup into a pool…or tries to. The resulting dents are later banged out by the NHL.

2000 New Jersey Devils
Scott Gomez takes the Cup through Anchorage, Alaska via dogsled. Martin Brodeur and his family smuggle it into a theater and eat popcorn out of it.

Funny funny stuff, but as SSJTOM said, how the hell do you smuggle the Stanley Cup into a movie theater?

1967 Toronto Maple Leafs

Red Kelly puts his baby boy in the bowl for a picture, he ends up doing a number 2 in the cup.

Didn't somebody on the Rangers throw it in their pool durring the summer of 94?

I recall something like that happening.

I also remember hearing that the rangers put a dent in it or something because someone dropped it.

Ok, I think we're talking about the same story. It was dropped into the pool and hit the side on the way down or something.

I beleive the Rangers were the reason the NHL started having the Cup chaperoned over it's summer "vacation" from the hall.
