NHL Player Poll

http://www.ottawasun.com/Sports/Hock...27198-sun.html

We scored in:

Worst Skater: Colton Orr(2nd)

Favorite NHL City To Visit: New York(1st)

Dirtiest Player: Sean Avery(1st)

Best Trash Talker: Sean Avery(1st), Brendan Shanahan(3rd)

and "IF I WAS NHL COMMISSIONER FOR A DAY, I'D ...":

Suspend Sean Avery... forever

So yea, everyone shares our thoughts about Colton Orr's skating, we continue to draw in the players, Avery is still doing his job the best he possibly could, and somehow Shanny is a great trash talker. Awesome....

I really wouldn't call Avery a "dirty" player. Yeah, he talks trash and fights a bit here and there, but he doesn't really throw dirty hits.

Somehow? Shanny has to be witty, he's always talking. To the refs, to PITAs on the other team, calming teammates down. Have you ever seen a classic Shanny interview? They're hilarious.

EDIT: My 525th post... That's my birthday! OK I'm done.

I didn't mean it that way. It doesn't shock me but it seems like there would be a lot more players that would be put on that list.

I'm surprised Tom Poti didn't win that category

Who wants to place bets on who said the last quote about suspending Avery? I'll go with Tucker.

BEST REFEREE

1. Bill McCreary

2. Kerry Fraser

Im always saying on the NHL boards how these two are the best, especially McCreary, nice to see the players agreeing with me

Agreed, Verbally dirty, not physically so much.

Funny to see Shanny close behind.

Are they not the two most senior refs in the game?

I believe they are up there, not sure if they are the most senior guys. Maybe some of the younger refs should try to call it like them. Consistency is key. Call everything, or call nothing, but keep it consistent, and those 2 are the best of doing that. McCreary started in '82 and Fraser started in '73 (wow).

The other senior guys are:

Shick started in '84 - Another GREAT referee, i'd put him as #3
Marouelli started in '82 - Better then most, not great.
Koharski started in '78 - Not a big fan of his game.
McGeough started in '86 - Terrible, thank god he's annouced he's done after this season.

Edit - well Don Van Massandsomething has been arond awhile, but IMO he isnt anything more then average.
I think those two are the most senior refs, so no surprise the players listed them

I always liked Macreary & Marouelli, but they've changed over the years, so has the game.

Question - was it Fraser who reffed game 7 of the finals in 1994?

"Mike" McGeough

this isnt a players poll, its players scouts, and any other random joe from canada. im surprised that the top cities to visit werent "Ottawa, Toronto, and Edmonton". it was probably a poll of Maple Leaf players and staff.

That can't be, I remember the guy coming into the league in the 80's.

That's actually not the mentality and voice he brings to the table.

I really don't understand how he was voted 3rd as a trash talker, probably because he's always right and other players are mad about that? That he's always by the refs to be the team lead during specific situations?

Who cares....Shanny..we love ya.

Avery too, 1st, but we saw that coming by miles.

He might have started off as a linesman and wasn't really recognized?

I got those years from the NHLOfficials website.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerry_Fraser also states he started in '73, as a referee.

It later goes on to say he joined the league in 1979 though, unless they meant thats when he got his first playoff game?

I think Shanny's trash talking is more of the comical side. It doesn't necessarily mean he has to be dirty or vile with what he says.

I know lots of guys who never "insulted" the opposing player, they'd just say weird and messed up stuff that would catch you off guard in a scrum, a faceoff, etc.
