does anybody else find this pretty dumb?

ok so ive been thinking about contracts and the off season and the CBA over the past little while, because with the oilers out the off-season is all i got really, lol

one thing that i just dont understand is how contracts are only good until the end of june, players become free agents on july 1st..... but the CBA is good until sometime in september...... now i realize that the contracts are only good until july 1st because the season is over in late may and the draft is over in june, it also gives a couple months for free agents to test the waters before the next season..... but then why does the CBA expire when it does? wouldnt it have made a LOT more sense to have it expire at the same time player contracts do, or maybe even a few weeks before player contracts expire? then teams that have free agents in the year a CBA expires would be able to make informed decisions about their free agents.... as it stands, teams are basically guessing what the outcome will be and dont really know how to approach their free agents ....... it seems like this is a situation that could have been prvented with a little bit of foresight

so am i missing something here? or is it just a FUBAR situation?

taking a wild guess but could well be that September marks the start of a new season since UFA's are handled in post-season. thus the CBA is for a new season thus it does not include the post-season.

you're right. big oversight by bettman and the owners the last time they negotiated the cba. although the new cba will be hammered out before the next season begins, teams will likely have to make contract decisions based on the old cba rules.
