Hurricanes Special Teams

I just noticed that we are 10-10 in the last 2 games on the PK. how awesome is that? Yeah, St. Louis is not good on the PP, but Atlanta is middle of the pack, and Boston is ranked 6th in the league in PP. I'd say we are doing pretty well there.

On the PP, we havent scored in the last 2 games, going 0-5. in the last 4 games we are 4 for the last 20, or 20%. If our scoring gets better, which it should, we will start scoring more PP goals. Especially if Staal continues to hang out in front of the goal.

what are your thoughts?

The team actually deciding to play defense after Grahame was demoted certainly helps there. This has definitely helped our PK, although I still say "wait and see" until this hot-streak goes for about 10 games there.

As for the powerplay, this is an area where Samsonov could certainly help a LOT. We really had nobody as creative with the puck as he is, so if he can translate that onto the powerplay we should start getting results again. I think that's where Sergei will do most of his production with the Canes in all honestly.

You have to think that the law of averages takes over at some point in the penalty kill like this. When you play as terrible as we did then you're going to have to turn it around at some point.

we are now 17-for-21 in the last 6 games on the PK. that gives us a total PK % of 81% much improved I'd say. at least that is one thing going well....our PP is 4-26 in the last 6 games, a lowly 15%, and 0-11 in the last 4 games. something really needs to change there again.

even if we still suck, that doesnt mean we haven't improved on the PK at least. we have to get better on both to have any chance to get into the post season

Every team can score on us. PP and PK both suck. You can fool yourself into thinking things are improving but until there's some consistency....

81%, 17 for 21, isn't statistically significant enough to say that we've really improved on the PK. Certainly the percentage is better over those past few games, but one bad bounce and we're back to 16 for 21, 76%...

The real test is if they can keep an 81% number up for any serious amount of time. And if St. Louis' lousy power play isn't one of the games we're factoring in.

secondly, every team can score on every team any night of the season. it's called PARITY. we have had our share of shutouts, 3 now, and there are some teams who have had less and are ahead of us I am sure (I will do the research on that later). but just because the whole rest of the season has sucked doesnt mean it does right now.

PK: Yeah it has sucked all season, but we are starting to get better. More long kills, more 5-on-3 kills. even a 5-min kill thrown in there to boot. consistency doesnt start at 10 games, or 20 games. consistentcy starts when the trend starts....and with 4 of the last 6 games having gone 100% on the kill, i'd say thats about as good a start as we could have, save for the other 2 games of course.

PP: Started off red hot, then faltered, but we are STILL 9TH in the league!! It may not look that good, and we may not score as much as we'd like, but we are still in the top 1/3rd of the league. And with the way Staal has been playing in front of the net lately, things have a chance to turn themselves around and get much better here.

one bad bounce, yes, but 1 extra good bounce and we are 18 for 21 instead, and 2 extra good bounces and we are 19 for 21 instead, and so on. it goes both ways. it really is a test to see if they can keep it up, and that is what consistency is all about. we can factor is St. Louis' PP as much as any other team can factor in our PK.
