Smyth, Horcoff, brewer will play for team Canada

via sportsnet this morning

Canada also wants Staios and Moreau but they haven't decided yet due to a long season (and i think Moreau has an injured shoulder too)

Jason smith rejected his invite so did Jason Spezza

Jason Smith?

If I was Spezza I'd reject it to.. why would he leave Ottawa for it? I don't get it..

I know after the 1st round, teams that are out send players (Draper/Maltby last year) but I haven't heard of this before.

i think it was reported in another thread that both Smith and Moreau turned down the invites due to injuries.

Smith has played on a broken ankle since January which was tightly taped just to play.

Moreau has two injured shoulders.

I remember Jason Smith spraining his ankle in December. When did Jason Smith break his ankle? Is it a different injury?

It would have been nice to see some of the younger Oilers get an invite, Torres or Bergeron for example.

With some of the declines, along with some 1 round exit players not wanting to look at a hockey stick for a while, they may still get the invite. Although I think Torres would be more likely to than MAB.

I'm kind of surprised that Torres didn't get an invite right off the bat.

On a side note, I wonder what will happen if there's no NHL season next year. Will all of the "declines" be invited again, or will Hockey Canada show some loyalty to the players who have shown up for them in the past?

There are guys like Sakic who have been busy in the playoffs every single year, but a lot of other guys just don't seem interested.

Torres not getting selected was a little surprising. Does anyone remember how quickly guys like Comrie, Horcoff, Chimera got the invite? (Relative to their rookie years) Or if indeed they were all invited at all? Could be a "you've got to earn your way & put your time in" situation.

Plus, about the declines getting a second chance. I think loyalty would be initially shown to the Ryan Smyth's, but in the end the desire to win would win out over hardcore loyaltly, and past indiscretions would be forgotten.
