Paul Mara

Anybody else notice lately Mara has been slowly racking up points?

Is it possible we've seen him find that offensive side?

He had some PP time a little bit ago and it seems when he doesn't have Malik or Strudwick along side him he feels he's covered enough to take a chance offensively. Granted, it's all been assists, but, he's had 7 assists in the last 10 games.. I think it's just gone un-noticed because we've been losing.

Paul Mara starting to find his offensive game?

Ya. This entire thing is so true. He has a ridiculously hard slap shot that goalies can't control the rebound of. As sam and joe always say " If you get the puck to the net, good things will happen"

I wish Mara would play more physically and fight a bit every now and then. he has done it on the bolts, yotes and bruins. He has not fought as a Ranger yet, I know its not his game but he does do it every now and then.

He is physical enough when he has to be. I don't think that's his game. He hasn't dropped the gloves but he's always in there when there is a scrum. Let Paul just blast his slap shot from the point. It might go in, produce a rebound that we can put in or give a forward a chance for a redirection tip (ala Prucha). Good things happen when you shoot the puck.

he's been shooting and shooting hard. the last game where Prucha got the goal it was off his shot.

underrated guy, although at the same people were expecting too much from him and i think he was too. now he's more comfortable and stepping into the offense more.

So while Mara is serving his 5 minute penalty, which one of malik or struds are you comfortable with getting that extra icetime?

I like Mara. He's like the least flashiest player you can imagine, but he quietly gets things done.

He is mentioned on here like once a week

But, hasnt every rangers defenseman. He is a very talented offesinve defenseman, but the rangers have had all defensemen put up offensive points. So would his stats be worse on another team?

I don't mind him on the team but don't think he's worth anymore than his salary... Infact I think he's worth more like $2.5 mil...

i forget which game it was but i noticed him on the powerplay. I think it was the game girardi got cut that i noticed his presence for the first time. He does have probably the hardest shot from the blueline and hes been finding the net lately. I think it was more a matter of somebody getting on his a$$ to shoot then him getting good all of the sudden. Hes a guy that a lot of people have complained about, yes hes high priced but he doesnt really seem like a liability, especially since he got scratched back in november? His salary isnt all that high compared to other D men, compared to malik's hes by far a better bargain, but you cant beat a guy like girardi only making .5 mil and tyutin making .9

Yeah, I guess that's about right, maybe 2.25. He's not real great but not bad either. I never really understood why so many wanted him traded. I think Rene sat him early in the season because he had to choose between he Struds and Malik and went with the players that he and Jagr liked the most. MM's horrendous play and Mara's respectable play has made him unquestionably in the top 5 of the Ranger's D.

No. Only Girardi and Rozsival. Mara, lately, has lived up to his offensive potential though.

if paul mara wanted to be, he could be one of the 3-5 best defenseman in the league. im talking just in terms of sheer talent. the guy can skate, shoot, pass, fight, take the body, throw open ice hits, and has pretty good positioning. for some reason he never seems to put it all together.

Interesting.. I can tend to agree mostly, but I don't think he can throw that deadly of an open ice hit...

Mike...

if Mara is in the penalty box, then one of Malik or Struds likely is not in the lineup. So to answer the question, for five minutes, I wouldn't mind either taking their regular shift on a third pair while one of Toots, Girard, Rozsival or Staal take an extra shift, or the first or second pair gets one to two shifts more, or one additional each.

And of course you're talking about a couple times per game as I believe people are just looking for the passion level in Mara to rise to the point of dropping the gloves. When guys like that stand up for a teammate and drop the gloves, it gets noticed and teams come together.

I would like to see him drop the gloves at least once with a NYR sweater on.

And yet isn't even in the same stratosphere as that. It says something. And it also should put expectations into perspective. I'd be very happy if he would just shoot as much as possible given the good opportunities. His shot form the point is best on the team and literally amounts to a dangerous scoring chance almost anytime it gets through.
