OT: NHL Extends VS Contract

According to a small article in today's New York Times, the NHL has extended the VERSUS broadcast contract through the 2010-2011 season.

This is hardly surprising given Bettman's comments on NHL Live last Thursday. In that show he felt that ESPN couldn't cover the NHL in that way the NHL wanted and expected. VERSUS is now available in over 74MM households.

why can't they just do both? Sorta like what the NBA, NFL, MLB all do.

Another bad move from Gary Bettman. Is he really still commissioner? You know, I'm starting to buy into the whole conspiracy theory that David Stern only recommended Bettman for the job to destroy the NHL and prevent it from becoming bigger than the NBA.

I only just recently got VS at home and still don't get it at school. So now when the Rangers play on VS and I'm upstate, I'll be in Quebec watching an LNAH or QMJHL game while the NHL continues to flounder and hope for ratings. So much for increasing the popularity of the NHL when some prospective fans can't even WATCH it.

I look forward to watching more games with the camera zoomed in too much, whipping around madly.

I hate VS.

How could VS be a good thing for the NHL compared to the ridiculous monopoly ESPN has in sports entertainment?

I'd love to hear Bettman's reaction to that.

Its not about the households. Its about the ratings, exposure.

ESPN's commentary would certainly be a lot better than Versus'. Those guys on VS are buffoons, while ESPN at least has Barry Melrose.

Melrose isn't a buffoon? He's one of the biggest shmucks I've ever listened to. His shtick is tired, he's a baseless hater, and he actually liked the orange isles jerseys

This sucks. Versus is a ****ing joke to me. I can't stand the commentators anymore and just about everything about it.

They don't even show the replays on penalties for godsake. And all the Crosby lovin' while leaving out every other star in the game.

I wonder what they will talk about now that he's injured...

...Oh wait, they'll just talk about him being injured every game

They'll discuss how an incredibly motivated athlete like Crosby stays in game shape blah blah blah.

Just so you guys stay grounded: we had no NHL deal when i was growing up !
It was about 20 or so road games a year on channel 9, and I was damn happy to have them !

Agree with everyone who says Versus sucks. Dont know how many times Ive been at a bar or someone's house and asked if they could put the Rangers game on, they ask what channel, I say "Versus" and then just get a look of complete confusion.

I don't get why the "coverage" was the selling point for Bettman. There's about 3 hours of NHL coverage two nights a week, and the rest of the network is bull riding. Please Gary, Versus is terrible.

74MM HH? That's not bad considering the age of the network. I think when the deal started they only had 50.

The NHL is growing VS. although there isn't really much of a benefit for the NHL while it goes thru it’s transformation.

Bettman rhetoric aside, ESPN didn’t and doesn’t want the NHL. So why not partner with someone who wants you.

Versus doesn't cover hockey outside of that 3 hours a night 2 nights a week when a game is on. They don't have any program like SportsCenter.
Please, Gary, put the league on a network that can cover it all the time and increase the popularity of the sport. Just having the COMMERCIALS air on ESPN would get the league into the consciousness of many more people and cause people to take hockey a lot more seriously instead of delegating it to the realm of fringe sports like bullriding.

Another example of Bettman's idiocy. He should be shot for being so short sighted.

Bettman needs a vacation from all his hard work.

Maybe he should go on a hunting trip with Cheney.
