thanks guys, just what i thought, his stats aren't that good and so i do agree he is worth a grinder 3rd liner but that's too much money and too long of a contract. we are loaded with wingers over the next three years atleast and now we have a guy that can't score. not a good contract, imo.

Especially when you consider Sami Pahlsson is one of the best checking line players in the league and he's getting $1.4 million/year.
Sean Avery Makes 1.9M has never scored more than 15 Goals in the NHL
Jason Williams Makes 1.6M has never scored more than 21 Goals in the NHL Per Johan Alexsson makes 1.85M has never scored more than 17 Goals in the NHL
Brett McLean makes 1.7M has never scored more than 15 Goals in the NHL
Chris Graton makes 1.5M has never scored more than 17 Goals in the NHL
The list goes on. Is the contract great? No.
But its not terrible there are far worse out there. Jason is a good team guy, plays well enough in his own end hes on the second PK line. On a team that is top 3 in the NHL on the PK.
Could the signing have been better, yes. But on the bright side if it was MacLean it would have been 2.5M 5 years with NTC.
Some of the comments in this thread both piss me off, and make me laugh. I'll leave it at that, but I wonder to myself, if we were a powerhouse team, always winning, would we be more positive and supportive of our team's decisions? I have never seen a group of individuals so critical and negative about "their team".
This is a good signing. Chimmer isn't relied on to score points, but he does. He's a locker-room presence, a great forechecker, and his speed, when on a line with other speedsters, can be extremely useful. It wouldn't surprise me to see an "A" on his chest next season, with Feds, Vybes and Foote potentially gone.
As was mentioned earlier, Chimmer was on Team Canada. He played quite well at last year's Worlds, and had an awesome training camp this season. Remember Chimmer-Brass-Voracek? Far and away our best line, and if things go like they should, the line should be back together next season.
I'd like to see what Chimmer does down the stretch playing with Brass and Brule. That could be exciting and productive.
Four years is a long time, but realistically I think the team is looking at 2 years of service. He can be moved at any time, whether that's a trade or a move to the minors. I think it's safe to say that Howson wanted two, but managed to save some yearly cap room by lengthening the term.

Its not that bad.
But those contracts are out of context. The Blue Jackets situation is we have a bunch of future third line NHLers in the minors and juniors who are going to need playing time in the next four years. They probably won't generate any LESS production-wise. And they'll do it for far less than $1.85 million.

Those same guys can now be used as trade bait/depth guys in case someone is injured. The difference is Chimera is a known quantity to the team while the other guys are still developing. Could they end up being better than Chimera and they're definitely cheaper but they may be downgrades initially while we know what we're gonna get from Chimmer...Hard work, good forechecking, speed, good PK work, shots 5 feet wide of the net, 4.56 offsides a game.
As much as I dont like Chims with Z who else are you going to put on the 2nd line with him?
Boll?
Murray?
Brule?
Face it we are a team of 3rd and 4th line minus 4 players on a good night.
I'd rather have Brule on the line with Z than Chimmer. At least Brule has a decent shot, and I think many still expect Brule to develop into a much better player than Chimmer, and while being on Z's line, he'd be getting more ice time.
There's $875k already spent out of the Fedorov money.
Its really mindboggling when you think about all of the wings this team has coming up over the next 4 years.
I'll be astounded if Vyborny is re-signed after this move. And I'll be interested to see what happens with Fritsche.
This is the truth.
Re: Vybes, if he is not re-signed and Voracek takes his place, then that would be $1.325MM saved. Hopefully Voracek can step in and contribute on the second line next season.
I guess I've been in the mindset that Feds' money was going to go towards a true #1 center this offseason. I've got to look at the list of impending UFA centers to see if one could be had for about $6MM (maybe not, given what Gomez and Drury got this past offseason).

At this point I would much rather have Chimmy than Vyborny. Vybs on the front page of the dispatch today was the perfect picture of his season, getting smashed and knocked on his butt.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
I hope to eat these words, but I seriously doubt I'll have to.
As nearly always Lee, I have to agree.
Here's a thought . . . Let's just resign all the existing players to long term deals, and expect a different result!
Only positive I see here is that securing Chimera long term in this fashion somehow plays to our favour in potential trades. I've given up guessingi at what GMSH has up his sleeve trade-wise.
I’m okay with the signing. Would’ve rather seen it for less, but what contract wouldn’t we as fans rather see for less? I don’t think the payment is that outlandish and I don’t think it hinders the Jackets from 1) making trades and 2) signing more important help in the offseason.
This is just one move in the grand scheme (there is a grand scheme, right? ) for the future of the Jackets. I’m not going to pass too much judgement on this until I see what moves follow.
Well, with the expansion of the cap, I think Chims may occupy a similar percentage of the new cap as compared to what he takes up now.
(All assuming a healthy cap growth)
Because Chimmer wasn't given a NTC, I can't be fully angered by such a move
Seems like a safe move that we can exit out of if we don't get what we are looking for from Chim
I'm no real fan of Chim's but I cannot say that I am going to seek out Scottie's head, like some people seem ready to do...
Hmmmm I dunno about this one. For the record, out of all the Jackets, Jason is the one I'd most like to hang out with for a day; seems like an awesome dude. I've also had relatively high hopes for him as a player as well, but the problem is, I've never really seen him be able to bring it all together. He's kind of one of those guys that gets a lot of chances to impress you and... well... doesn't
So yeah, part of me is elated to have him in a Jackets uniform for the next 4 years, and the other part hopes to hell he gets his act together
