The top looks great. I would drop the bugs behind the navigation.

Other than that it's a good start. Right on.

As a webstandards fanatic and drooling obsessed stalker fangirl of Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Håkon Wium Lie, I am compelled to strenuously and vociferously object to ANY designing of a webpage in Photoshop.

Okay, now that that's out of the way...

1) The top image is nifty and I do like it. Width is probably fine, although I'd try to find some way to throw it together such that it's flexible (which would be quite a trick).
2) The silver "sidebars" do not work for me.
3) I agree with the others who suggest getting rid of the bug. (I would also consider making that menu smaller.)

What you're definitely going to want is photos. Lots and lots of photos. And not just in a "Pictures" section; I mean other images here and there to spice up that content area, because right now it's just blank. (I know, the design hasn't gotten that far yet, but still, it's a thought. )

As a graphic designer, I'm curious to know why that is.

What exactly is your process for creating raster images and page layout for websites?

Raster images? I would create them in Photoshop if I had a copy. I use The GIMP instead 'cause I do have a copy of that. I don't use too many raster images in my work, though.

Page layout? I sketch it on a piece of paper, but graphics programs are OK. I'll also occasionally just start writing up some test code with Lorem Ipsum for content and see how it flows.

It's not so much the tool used as some of the folks who use them, but I prefer to blame the tool because I like to give the folks the benefit of the doubt. It also doesn't help that I grew up as a geek during those years when many designers out there were under the misapprehension that "pixel-perfect design" was a reasonable and expected way to design Web pages.

I *did* warn you this was the statement of a drooling fangirl...

Graphics centric programs like Photoshop and Fireworks don't create clean HTML like development centric programs like Dreamweaver or Frontpage. If someone doesn't truly know what they're doing with those programs in terms of web development, the results can be crap compared with other, more dev oriented tools.
