1976 Canada Cup, Czechoslovakia goalie!

I just found this interesting gem while searching for vintage hockey clips on youtube.

Canada vs. Czechoslovakia in the 76 Canada Cup!

Czechoslovakia has a helmetless goalie!

I think most NHL goalies had helmets (or at least masks) by the mid 60's. Andy Brown was the last holdout and he retired in 1974.

It just seems so weird watching a goalie without any facial protection as late as 1976.

Before Perestroika, the Communist countries couldn't always afford all the equipment they needed ...

Great video, thanks for posting.

Uhh, I believe it has more to do with Vlado Dzurilla's traditionalism than with lack
of money. Quite a few NHL-ers play without a visor, and it's not because they're too poor to get one.

Actually, hockey was receiving a very good financial support from the state before 1989 in Czechoslovakia and virtually all talented kids had the opportunity to play without troubling their families' budgets, which is not the case as of today.

I think it was a joke (about lack of money for the goalie mask).

I don't think so, but my sarcasm detector may be broken... I haven't got a clue,
really.

Andy Brown continued to go maskless throughout his World Hockey Association career, which ended in 1977.
