League executive says Richards to Dallas and Hossa to Montreal will happen

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/nhl...?urn=nhl,68602

"The Dallas Stars will acquire Tampa Bay Lightning center Brad Richards in a multi-player trade and Atlanta Thrashers right wing Marian Hossa is heading to the Montreal Canadiens before the NHL trade deadline, an executive within the league said Monday night.

The Stars have looked to make a splash since Les Jackson and Brett Hull took over in the co-general manager role for the fired Doug Armstrong earlier this season. The source said Dallas is expected to package veteran checking center Jeff Halpern, backup goalie Mike Smith and young defenseman Mark Fistric to the Lightning, who needed to move Richards after signing defenseman Dan Boyle to a six-year, $40 million contract extension late Monday."

Tampa would've gotten a king's ransom from a desperate Lowe last summer if they had pulled the trigger then.

Interesting stuff. A few teams fans will be crying in their pillows tomorrow. Hossa in Montreal should be interesting and Richards should fit in with the Stars style pretty nicely.

if thats the trade for Richards (im assuming picks are involved too), that is a junk package. 3rd line center, backup goalie (who will probably become their starter... maybe.) and a decent shutdown/hitting prospect? its ok for filling in gaps but its minimal talent loss for Dallas.

seems like they could have got more from bidders than that crapola.

Was hoping for Jokinen out of the three. For the money he makes the most sense.

Yeah, why can't we give them Reasoner, Roloson, and Matt Greene?
Heck I'd even add a 5th round pick!

One of my good buddies is a huge HABS fan (moderator on HF). Poor guy, the Habs haven't given him much to cheer about over the past decade. I know he'd be thrilled with Hossa.

This is a big upgrade for Dallas if it happens, but it will put them pretty close to the cap so it takes another player out of the game for some of this years FA's.

Let me warn you about Habs fans

they are a lot easier to be around when their team isn't winning.

Habs still have the most Cups since the expansion era but I wish they'd shut up talking about what happened before then. The playing field wasn't level and there were six teams so just shut up about it.

Not that I grew up around a bunch of idiot Habs fans around or anything

The guy who talked about Richards to Edm this past summer, that's an interesting thing to throw around, isn't it?

Given Lowe's history, you'd have to think he could've bested what they're gonna get from Dal. First guy out the door is Lupul and he's probably playing with VL-MSL and look at his shiny counting stats Plus, TB needs help at D and we've got a bunch of young fellows we could send there.

And maybe if we spent all that money on Richards, we wouldn't have spent it on Souray.

I think Feaster should get ripped for how he handled this. Everyone and their dog Knew he had to break up the top three and it had as much with trying to space out your money as it did with how competitive they weren't going to be.

And I think he's making a big mistake if he unloads him today. What's the bloody hurry? You might get one or two desperate teams today but wait until all hands get together at the draft and by that time a lot more times will have had time to think about if they can fit him in.

And in the meantime put him back together with MSL-VL and pump the shag out of his counting stats and improve his plus minus.

Mike Smith is a better goalie than a lot that's out there as known "starters". He's only a back-up to Marty Turco remember. I think if this is indeed true Tampa managed to accomplish their main tast, dump salary and Dallas picks up a hell of a guy for a cup run albeit an expensive one.

Richards make Dallas so much better.

Top 6:
Richards, Morrow, Modano, Rieiro, Lehtinen, Jokinen

Great top 6, no superstar 100 pointers but there isn't many teams who have that much fire power and solid 2-way play top 6ers.

If Dallas gets a marque player like Richards, that bodes well for our draft position - ie - if they can end up first in their division over the quacks and if they keep ANA from advancing to the conference finals (or finals).

mike smith is good enough to be a starter right now and will probably only get better.. this is a good trade for tampa in picking up smith..

the habs realize that koivu and kovalev is at the stage where the next year could be the year they drop off the face of the earth so they desperately need this move even if hossa moves on in the offseason.. however i don't think the overall talent is quite there to go deep in the playoffs.. can't fault them for trying though..

And beat up all the other teams so the Oil can move up the standings too
