Exactly. There is no way you can justify today's work by Gainey as a Habs fan. Pitts did not overpay for Hossa, they probably gave away less than Gainey was originally planning on trading. Terrible job by Gainey. Loses his only goalie with playoff experience and gets zilch in return.

Ouch.

People need to calm down. Gainey made the right decision. The price was WAY to steep, and there is no guarantee that Hossa isn't anything but a 3 month rental.

To beat what Pitsburg offered, I would think the Habs would need to trade something along the lines of Higgins/Kosty, Lappy/Ryder/Streit, Grabs/Chips + a 1st (at LEAST)... And you would have to be insane to trade that for a rental.

Gainey will take alot of heat for this deadline, like he did last year, but he made the right move by not trading away core players.

This is a horrible over-payment by the Penguins. Waddell gave Gainey and option to match that deal... but there's no way.

Would you be okay with Latendresse, Higgins, Chipchura and a 1st?

It's a huge price to pay. Gainey simply said no. And he was right.
+1
Gainey took the right decision. Too pricey for a rental who wouldn't re-sign here.

they have been trying to get rid of Christensen for a year now.Since when did Armstrong become a superstar? Also esposito the pens never would have bet that they would end up getting him at #20.Comon guy's it's a very good trade for the Pens except for the 1st round pick

However the Gill trade was terrible for them

Yeah, give the fans a week to calm down. I think Gainey did good not to trade our future.

I also am happy we didn't overpay for a rental

Hossa was not going to bring a cup to Montreal this year

We're still a very very young team.

Gainey was not going to resign Huet long term in the summer. I loved that guy but it just won't happen, and he's not going to sign a 1 year, 2 million extension after the solid play he's had here when Tampa is more than likely to go after him hard.

Hossa isn't going to resign in Pits as there's no way they can afford it.

Everyone that thinks Bob failed needs to relax. He said himself he wasn't going to overpay for a rental or trade away any of his roster core. Pittsburg overpaid stupidly for a rental. With the way the West looks I doubt the Penguins are going to win it all anyway.

My 2 cents

So instead of slitting my wrists...

...I'm just going to relax and kick back knowing the pieces that have been put in place for a kick at the can are still here.

This team is close...but it's not close enough. I wanted Hossa as much as anyone but clearly, Gainey felt the price was too high.

I don't know how many times it has to be said that next year has always been the year where we were supposed to be reaching for greater heights and based on the progression of certain players and the re-emergence of others, I'm still pleased with where we stand.

It's a gradual process to build a strong, healthy franchise in the new NHL and Gainey and his staff are doing it perfectly, IMO.

The sky has not fallen. The sun is rising.

Of all the possible results I could've thought up, trading Huet to Washington as the sole move would never have crossed my mind. But now that it has happened it's not really bizarre. Didn't we expect to see Halak given a shot in the NHL at some point this year? Were we really going to sign Huet to the kind of contract he ought to seek (5 years)?

Let's see how good the kids are.
