I love this.... We are dead in the water because we traded Federov and Foote.... Come on.... All thru the year reading the threads, everyone been asking for this... Now it happens... I believe this will allow payers to come up (Method ??? Lindstrom ???) others....

We have been the underdogs all year.... Lets shake things up and still make the playoffs..... This would turn some heads.... We got a good team.... Two players don't make the team....

Well, if you are right then that is the thing to do. As much as I hate it, it is the smart move. But why is it so sure that these guys won't be back? Want too much money? It's obvious that Vyborny is undersome kind of strange spell this year, but the other guys are decent. Will they be too expensive?

I just absolutely hate fire sales. Always have. There is always the talk of building for the future, but you can't build and tear down year after year. At some point, you have to build and only selectively remove if necessary to keep the building going.

Peca might not be back because he doesn't bring much to the team unfortunately

He is third on the team in points, if that's worth anything...

I'd trade Peca. Let Brassard, Fritsche and Brule all center a line. Rotate what line they play on. See if we can't solve our depth problem internally.

I didn't know this part of the deal. Teams are pulling much more for their vets. I understand he would only wave the NTC for the Avs, but swallow the C-bus premium if that's all you can get. I for one am tired of picks. I want at least young affordable talent with upside instead of a 1st rounder in the 20th pick range:

Giguere sent a conditional first-round draft pick and a fourth-round selection to the Columbus Blue Jackets. It will reportedly be a 2008 first-round pick if the Avalanche make the playoffs. If not, it's a 2009 first-rounder.

Also, if Foote re-signs with Colorado, the Blue Jackets apparently will receive another draft pick.

I don't think these trades are going to make the team as bad in the short term as everyone thinks. I mean we didn't have Feds for awhile and we played pretty much like we always had, who's not to say that someone like Brassard won't run with the opportunity of more playing time and put up some points. I mean Foote and Feds are names that have had great success in the past, but I think we over estimate their value to the team. If Foote isn't going to re-sign and Feds is on the way out anyway, why not get something for them? I was just as pissed as anyone when I saw the dump offs, but I think it had more to do with us not getting Richards than anything. We can't hang our heads and mope about it, there's still a hockey season left and we're still in it. It's better than no hockey season or not being in it, or getting a 7th round pick for Anson Carter. I just hope they rally around this like the Avs did when they had injuries instead of giving up.

TSN is reporting Buffalo traded Brian Campbell to San Jose for Steve Bernier and a 1st round pick. Looks like tomorrow's game just got a little bit rougher.

Barring another deal still in progress which will make me eat my words, is anybody else banging their heads off their desks right now?

Foote on cbc radio right now. He seems genuinely shocked that the deal didn't get done.

I really thought we were going to make some good strides, but I'm disappointed. I guess Howson has written this year off. We're off $500k per year with Foote????? Come on! Meet them halfway or something. Big hit to leadership. Nationwide is going to be empty the rest of the season, I suspect.

How is it a sad day? We traded 2 UFA that everyone thought would be gone.

We'll see if anything else trickles out. I remember a few deadlines ago, when Sandy got traded to Vancouver, it didn't come out until 6 p.m., 6:30? something like that.

Heck no! Foote was no way worth $4 million per year for two years. To only have one potential trading partner and still get at least a first-rounder for him is, in my opinion, outstanding!

I would have liked a little more for Fedorov, but apparently all of those rumors about Detroit and Ottawa coveting him were not so much true.

Richards would have been nice, but we lost a bidding war to a team that had more resources available to offer. (Actually a better fit to Tampa's needs, but it amounts to the same thing.)

The playoffs have been a real longshot since the first few games after the All-Star break. Richards might have made that fantasy come true, but it wasn't worth mortgaging the future to find out.

We ended up being sellers, but did OK in that role. Now we go forward with a few extra draft choices, a lot more cap room, and no really horrific contracts to carry. Some young guys will get some more NHL ice, and we'll start next season with a lot more reason for real hope. At least we got something out of those two assets.

It sounds to me like a lot of the angst being expressed around here is being caused by unrealistic expectations.

Would have been nice if we'd gotten some offensive talent in return. Oh well, continue to build from picks and within. It's worked for 7 seasons, might as well keep it going.
